SUCCESSFUL DEBATE WEEKEND AT WEST POINT AND HARVARD

LDU students and coaches attended two tournaments this weekend, at West Point and Harvard. At both tournaments UVM students debated above their eligible division, continuing a tradition of accepting the challenge of tougher competition.
At West Point three out of the four UVM teams reached the elimination rounds. Novices Mariellen Jewers (Trinity College) and Adam Zerenner were 4-2, and then lost a disputed decision in the octafinals 2-1. Meanwhile, the totally novice team of Mark Douglas (Middlebury) and Peter Winfield were 4-2 in the JV division, but then met the other UVM JV team of Anthony Pagan (novice) and Jaime Robertson, with Anthony and Jaime advancing since they had one more speaker point. They then lost a disputed 2-1 decision in the Semifinals. Greta Lockwood and Aaron Fishbone (a JV) debated in the varsity division and found the experience highly educational.
At Harvard Helen Morgan and Sarah Snider finished 4-4 after a number of extremely challenging debates, but were pleased that they unveiled a number of new negative arguments. Coaches Jackie Massey and Trond Jacobsen were sai to be pleased with the books they found in Boston's most radical bookstores.
