THE SUMMER OF 1999 .... was an extremely active time for the LDU and its members.
May - Students and staff worked voluntarily to complete two huge research projects on the 1999-2000 national high school debate topic on academic achievement in secondary schools - a 384 page compendium of research and arguments [Eastern Evidence Debate Handbook] and a first-ever CD-ROM [Policy Debate 2000] containing evidence, argument, instructional materials, extensive research links, and a video exhibition debate. The sale of these materials supports computer purchases to research next year's products!
May - Prof. Snider chairs the Third Annual Debate Ideafest, sponsored by the Open Society Institute in NYC, to explore and plan for the expansion of high school debating in urban centers nationwide. Other LDU students and staff judge at a NY Urban Debate League tournament and attend the annual awards banquet. Anthony Pagan, NYUDL 1998-99 Champion, announces he will attend UVM.
June - Prof. Snider and Sarah Snider both teach at the Emory National Debate Institute in Atlanta. They are joined by LDU alums Lisa Heller, Paul Kerr, and former LDU coaches John Meany and Jan Hovden.
July - LDU website [Debate Central] begins live broadcasting over the internet using RealPlayer.
August - LDU hosts 400 people at the 17th World Debate Institute held at UVM. High school and college students, coaches and faculty, policy and parliamentary debaters all join to make it a huge success. First live global broadcast of a debate using the internet. Reviews by global viewers are positive, but they complain about American accents.
August - 200th Flashpoint television show is broadcast live over the internet and is taped for viewing on Adelphia Channel 15 in Burlington. Many longtime Flashpoint panelists return to appear on the show.
August - Prof. Snider joins graduates Rae Schwartz and Justin Parmett serving as faculty at the NYUDL Refresher Workshop held at Manhattan Community College in NYC.
For several years Trinity College students have been learning, debating, and traveling with the LDU in an effort to expand debating in Vermont. The LDU has now established a formal working relationship with Joanne Farrell, Trinity faculty, to work cooperatively to enhance debate experiences for all students. The plan is to recruit 2-4 Trinity students, train them, and then have them travel with us to competitions. An argumentation teacher, Joanne plans to develop her coaching abilities and then accompanying the LDU and Trinity groups to tournaments. Thanks Joanne!
