UVM DEBATE IS #9 & #10 IN FINAL NATIONAL SWEEPSTAKES

| HIGHLIGHT PHOTOS |

The goal of the Lawrence Debate Union is to facilitate the personal growth and development of its members as well as the community they constitute. This is done through the method of debate, and a lot of it is competitive debate. However, that does not mean that there is not a lot of competitive success surrounding the program, and on a national level. These results stand as a stark empirical testament to what UVM student debaters have done this year.

The two national sweepstakes races involve all competitive debates during the 2002-2003 season on the national policy debate topic. The Cross Examination Debate Association conducts one set of sweepstakes, while the American Forensic Association-sponsored National Debate Tournament conducts another. 26,725 two hour debates were part of this process. Both sweepstakes polls are counted in slightly different ways and a few schools only belong to one of the organizations.\

While it is useful to see how Vermont did and who finished ahead of Vermont it is also very useful to note the many school of tremendous academic repute that finished behind Vermont. Most of the schools in the top fifty have larger budgets than Vermont and almost all recruit high school debaters using extensive scholarships which Vermont does not do. These observations are simply made to point out the accomplishment of Vermont students rather than to complain.

SARS RISK CANCELS CHINA TRIP

The decision reported last week to go ahead with the trip to China to plan for the August college debate institute to be held there was made irrelevant last Friday when Vice Provost Park ruled that all UVM programs to countries on the SARS warning list should not go forward until further notice. Hours away from departure coach Snider was disappointed but resigned to the decision. He was quoted as saying, "I'll be back."

Europe-USA Relations is 2003-2004 Topic Area

The topic area that the LDU selected as fourth out of five won a tight race and was announced as the 2003-2004 national policy debate topic area, Europe-USA relations. Now the CEDA topic committee will draft four or five topics within this area to submit for a vote during the summer, with the winning topic becoming the national resolution for next year.
