The Rani has an evil plan - to clone Rasillon and Omega and produce young versions with brain patterns which she would edit. With these powerful servants she will rule the universe. To experiment on cloning an ancient Timelord from stolen Matrix data she chooses, out of spite, the Doctor's former spouse and Susan's grandmother, Lora, and clones a copy with only slightly edited brain patterns. A lock of her hair is delivered to the Doctor as a tease. The Doctor senses who the hair belongs to and comes to Snatalius where the Rani has a base. Snatalius is populated by the lizard-like Reptoids and a race of semi-intelligent giant snails, the Slugs. There, the Doctor walks into the Rani's trap only after arranging for the doom of her experiments even before landing based on Matrix data. He lands and is captured, and there meets Lora. She remembers him as a different person, but recognizes him. Lora knows she is not the "real" Lora and opposes the Rani's evil plan. Satisfied with the experiments, the Rani prepares to revive Rasillon's clone. There, the Doctor has to stand by while the trap he has set some time ago springs into action, destroying all of the Rani's clones, including Lora. They must say good-bye again. Both knew that the other was not the "real" companion from another time and another place. All of that is gone forever.
The Doctor: wandering Timelord in his 10th persona.
Irish: strange green cat with telepathic and shape-shifting capabilities. Companion to the Doctor.
The Rani: powerful female Timelord obsessed with biotechnic experiments.
Loradneuropaea clone [Lora] (see RETURN TO GALLIREY, NADWSim): clone of the Doctor's original spouse (Susan's grandmother). She and the Doctor met while young, and eventually fell in love while at the Academy (an unusual thing for Timelords) after Flavia also tried to court the Doctor. The rest of the details of their relationship are unknown (the Doctor is very quiet about such things) but it is known that she died in a terrible incident while many legendary Timelords watched (including Flavia and the Doctor, but rumor has it that Rassilon and Omega were also there). Details of this incident are still lacking. BUT REMEMBER... This is her Clone. The Rani's new cloning technology is able to take information from biodata extracts and grow a new creature, BUT is also able to regrow memory patterns as they existed at death and recorded in the Matrix, AND then EDIT them as the Rani decides. Buxom, 5'8", long red hair, face not unlike Romana #1, tends to be very direct and self-assured.
Chikush: Chief Tetrap (see TIME AND THE RANI) - Servant of the Rani, a large bat-like creature with eyes on all sides of its head. Eats a foul slime which the Rani controls the supply of. Has a sting tipped tongue it uses to stun victims.
Lizbo: Technophant of Dark-Moist Clutch, Snatalius (female Lizard person) - A nerd-like teachnical bureaucrat. Is obsessed with gaining technology from the Rani and is willing to sacrifice almost anything to get it. She despises Aoogah's self-indulgent nature, and dreams of replacing his rule with an enlightened technocratic regime which she will direct, but for now she must cooperate with Aoogah. She admires the Rani's abilities and ruthlessness.
Aoogah: Lord of Dark-Moist Clutch, Snatalius (male Lizard person) - Is suspicious of the Rani, but follows the advice of Lizbo that the technology she offers is worth the sacrifices they make for her work. Is a huge and corpulent lizard person, drools quite a lot, and is constantly thinking about delicious grubs and worms to east and the many females in the clutch who need to be fertilized.
Warriors of Dark-Moist Clutch (Lizard people): See planetary abstract.
Giant Snails of Snatalius: See planetary abstract.
Gothal: Director of the CIA (1 only) - Currently a brain-implanted slave of the Rani.
Irish gets run over by a giant snail chomping its way through the heavy forest, and is covered with slime. He is not crushed because the giant slug is soft and its weight is widely distributed. The Reptoids chasing Irish capture him while he is still dazed. He is partially dazed because he had established telepathic contact with the Slug through the slime. As the Reptoids takes Irish away, he is awakening disturbed by bizarre images of the giant slug's thoughts. Irish is confused, but remembers that he has a mission to perform. He is unable to escape as the Reptoids have him in a fine wire net.
Lora and the Doctor [she calls him The for Theta] try to figure out exactly what the situation is, how real is the clone, how has Lora's mind been edited, and what the Rani's plan is. As the two long-separated Timelords begin to realize the horror of the situation (they desperately love each other, but neither is the REAL person the other loves ... one is a clone and the other has changed through time and regeneration) the Rani and her thugs reappear outside the forcefield to mock them. Having a nice time? Perhaps a second honeymoon? The Rani reveals her plan gloatingly -- create edited controllable clones of Rasillon and Omega and use them to rule all time and space.
Wrapped in the wire net, Irish is carried into the presence of Aoogah, leader of the Reptoids. The warriors poke Irish while Aoogah attempts to question Irish -- who are they, and why does the Rani care so much about them? Suddenly a huge slug head comes into a window and demands Irish's release. It is Big/Heavy, the lead slug. Big/Heavy announces that Irish has spoken to the slugs in their minds, and as such is one of them. Aoogah refuses, and tells the slugs to go back to work. Big/Heavy is very angry (for a slug) and quickly departs. Aoogah then threatens to dip Irish into a pool of carnivorous fish unless he reveals all to them. What is their plan against the Rani? Irish is used to eating fish, not being eaten by them. Irish begins to morph into a larger, stronger being but is unable to break free from the net.
The three leave the Doctor and Lora and go into the main control room to begin the main operation -- the animation of Omega and Rasillon. Lizbo and Chikush ask that their brain patterns be put into the two ancient Timelords so they can serve her. The Rani laughs at them, saying that she doesn't want the bodies of the ancients, but their powerful mind-body union, generating huge mental power at her control. She insults Lizbo and Chikush as being mindless thugs, simple servitors.
The two are left alone. They sit on the floor facing each other and holding hands. Lora may be a clone, but is nevertheless real and very curious. She asks the Doctor about his life since she died so tragically. [Details of her death must remain that she was in a dispute with the High Council over a moral issue, and died suddenly in an "accident."] The Doctor discusses his lives. Lora specifically wants to know about other women he has been involved with, and the Doctor reveals his short list [very short] of involvements: Xamayca [the Aztecs], his unspoken attraction to Jo [Green Death], his brief kisses with Grace [Enemy Within], and Flavia's recent attempt to get him to take a bubble bath with her. Lora is sad that the Doctor has never been able to love again, but appreciates his great devotion. She asks about her grand daughter Susan, and is pleased to know she is happy. The Doctor begins to realize that he cannot remember how Lora died, and that his memories of her are coming back only slowly. It bothers him a great deal. Lora weeps because she wants to take up with the Doctor where her death ended their time together, but she knows that she cannot, because no matter how much she feels and thinks like Lora, she knows that she is not, and that she is a creation of the Rani, not an original sentient being. The Doctor is very sad as well, because he is facing the only woman he has ever loved and yet knows that she is not the "real" Lora. This has been the cruelest tease ever perpetrated on him by any of his enemies.
As Irish refuses to tell Aoogah what he wants to know, the net begins to lower into the pool and the water roils as the fish try and jump up and get a first bite of cat. Big/Heavy then launches an attack on Aoogah's throne room, smashing in the walls from all sides. Huge psuedopods come through the doors and windows knocking Reptoids aside and pulling Irish free. As Aoogah is about to be crushed he orders Irish's release. The Psuedopods pick up Irish and bring him outside. He climbs onto the back of Big/Heavy's shell and rides there as they move away. The slug makes telepathic contact with Irish. The slugs are weary of living with the non-telepathic Reptoids, and greet Irish as a friend. They oppose the Rani's work with the genetic heritage of Snatalius, and they agree to cooperate, although Irish finds slugs to be fairly disgusting creatures, even if they are very intelligent and willful, and he is very grateful for being rescued.
The Doctor and Lora agree on two things. First, they cannot go back to the past because they are very different beings now, especially Lora. Second, that the Rani's plans must be destroyed, even if it means that all of her clones must cease to exist ... including Lora. As they embrace, knowing that there is no way back, they realize that no matter how logically they come to these conclusions, their emotions and their feelings for each other torture them. At this precious moment the Rani and her thugs reappear. The Rani mocks their meaningless love as infantile and hysterical. Her superiority to the Doctor is now fully revealed, she believes. Now, she will allow them to watch as she brings Rasillon and Omega back as her slaves, and then she will allow Rasillon and Omega to finish what they left undone so long ago -- the death of both of them. The disturbs the Doctor as his memories begin to come back. What does that mean? Did Rasillon or Omega kill Lora? He wants to know more, but there isn't time. He prepares to send the command to Irish to activate the energy pulse which will negate the molecular bindings in Rani's clones - all of them. The Doctor and Lora embrace again as the Rani laughs. As the episode ends the Doctor whispers to Lora that he has arranged for an energy pulse which will undo all of the Rani's clones, including her. Lora whispers of her love, which is overridden by the need to do what is right, even if it means her death. Doing what is right has always been the basis of their mutual respect and love. The Rani is laughing at them, and Chikush mocks the not-so-powerful Doctor.
