Last day is, of course, debate day

How else?

Two debates for the policy debaters. Four debates for the parliamentary debaters.

At 4:30 PM the final meeting of the five-week event takes place, where t-shirts are handed out, evaluations are filled out, thanks are given, pictures are taken, and the “hats” are handed out.

The “hats” are special awards given out at WDI now for over 15 years. The hats go to special students, not just to students who are successful debaters. Students who are responsible, help others, go beyond the call of duty, and offer other intangibles are selected by the faculty to receive one of a variety of University of Vermont hats. They ae prized possessions, and recipients have been seen years later still proudly wearing them at tournaments.

On Friday people will be off towards their homes and towards their next assignments. I will be on my way to Korea tomorrow to teach at a one-week high school institute and then a one-week college institute before I return home. I will be back in Vermont for about ten days before I take off for Europe where I will be during the fall on sabbatical.

The fun of debate just never stops!
