Many debates on Sunday

Sunday was a day for everyone to debate. With the morning free for rest and religious observations, the afternoon was busy with debates.

The policy debaters had two debates in the afternoon (about 5 hours) and the parliamentary debaters had their first of twelve debates at 1:30 followed by lectures on how to make arguments important (impacts and significance) and then a session on debating environmental issues before dinner. After dinner they had their second debate. The first debate seemed to go well. Many were nervous before the first debate (it was the first debater ever for many) but they seemed happy and relieved after the debate. Structure and organization seemed to be what people thought they needed to work on. The debaters who do not have English as their first language were very nervous, biut seemed to do well, and all then realized that their English is good enough as long as they have strong arguments. And it will get better. Debating, if you are trying to master Enbglish, is one of the best ways to improve English skills. Most of them were seen smiling at dinner pleased with themselves.

The policy debaters have just finished a huge research effort and they got to use the materials they have worked so hard to produce today. It broke a lot of ner ground for them, but they were enthusiastic in their approach and in their performances. The policy debaters, after debating all afternoon, have the evening to work on their new files and prepare for the final four days coming up, which will be every bit as intense as the last week.
