Monday is research day

Monday was a very intense day -- all day the students researched and produced arguments that they themselves had thought of and agreed on.

The process in each of five small groups involved:
1. Picking an argument to research and produce.
2. Development of a research plan using library, internet, books, periodicals, anything they could think of.
3. Sending students to gather the materials.
4. Reading and marking the evidence for the argument chosen.
5. Processing and “tagging” (writing out the argument that the evidence supports) the evidence.
6. Briefing the evidence and creation of a file with an index and an explanation of the argument.
This was done in a day-long frenzy, all morning, all afternoon, and into the evening.

The results were actually quite good. A wide variety of arguments were produced, affirmative and negative, and they reflected the interests of our students, which is always a good thing.

We will be posting a list of all arguments produced on the national high school policy debate topic later after the program ends.

Give someone evidence, and they have it for a season; each them how to find their own evidence, and they will be able to produce it for a lifetime on any topic.
