LDU coach Alfred Snider
has been invited to go to Korea by the director of their national championship
tournament, GyeongHo Hur of Kyung Hee University, to offer debate workshops
and to give the keynote speech at their first national debate tournament.
Prof. Hur expects well over 100 teams at this first tournament. Plans are
also in the works for a live webcast of the major events of the tournament.
Those of the Voice of Edwin mailing list will receive updates on the webcast
day and times.
Prof. Hur attended the World Debate Institute last summer for a month to learn
everything about debating, and seems to have done just that, creating widespread
debate participation in Korea as well as gain the sponsorship of the Prime
Minister and the Mayor of Seoul. In recognition of the contribution UVM and
WDI have made to Korean debating, the winners of the tournament will receive
scholarships and support to attend WDI's International Debate and Discussion
Workshop this summer. Plans for Snider's visit were finalized in Budapest
in October at the International Debate Education Association conference.
Prof. Snider flies to Korea on 17 December and returns on 24 December.

Six LDU representative made their way down to New York City last weekend to attend the NYUDL tournament held at Manhattan Center for Science and Mathematics. Coaches Jackie Massey, Sarah Snider, and Alfred Snider were accompanied by debaters Jillian Marty (NYUDL alumna), Lana Langswierdt, and Jennifer Knops. While Tuna was in tab the other five judged. Many UDL debaters have indicated an interest in UVM, and would be welcome considering the strong addition UDL students like Anthony Pagan and Jillian Marty have already made to the program.
