78 novice debate teams gathered at Washington Irving High School in Manhattan last Saturday for the Third NYUDL tournament of the season. The NYUDL is a cooperative effort between NYC schools, the Open Society Institute, and the IMPACT Coalition of NYC. UVM and the LDU have been involved since the very beginning. The program picks schools with high proportions of students in poverty and then starts interscholastic debate programs in those schools. The program. Now in its third year, has been tremendous success, with over 30 schools participating. For more information, see the website which the LDU hosts for the NYUDL at http://debate.uvm.edu/udl/udl.html.
The UVM presence was very much in evidence, as nine LDU folks made the trip to judge and show support. Tim Miller, Justin Parmett, Scott Geller, Shawn Wilkerson, Greta Lockwood, Kenan Osmanovic (pictured above), Rae Schwartz , and A. C. Snider were all on hand. Others wanted to come but stayed behind to prepare for final exams this week. All judged except for Snider who tabulated the tournament and paired the debates.
NYUDL students received application materials to UVM, and many are interested because of their good experiences at the World Debate Institute the last two summers. Three more tournaments are planned for next semester. Debaters with more experience than novices are now attending regular NYC area tournaments as part of the Mid-Hudson League.
