The Urban Debate League national movement is something the LDU is proud to be a part of. Now operating in over a dozen cities the program helps sponsor debate teams in underserved schools in urban areas. Started in Atlanta, the program now has started debate programs in hundreds of schools and has created thousands of new debaters. The program is financed through a partnership between local schools, community groups, universities with debate programs, and funding from the Open Society Institute. See http://debate.uvm.edu/udl/default.html
Last weekend Professor Snider attended the third tournament of the Providence Urban Debate League [PUDL], for which he is a consultant. He participated in teacher training and program evaluation. Many of the PUDL students attended the World Debate Institute this last summer.
Next weekend a group of LDU members will be attending a debate tournament in New York City to serve as judges and UVM recruiters. UVM has benefited greatly from NYUDL training, as current LDU debaters Anthony Pagan and Jillian Marty (as well as Middlebury's Mark Douglas) started debating in the NYUDL.
NEW YORK TRIP DETAILS: Massey is in charge and has the vehicle and hotel space. Pay for hotel space if you can. Passengers: Lockwood, Knops, Pagan, Marty, SSnider, MacDonald, Langswierdt. Leave at 5:30 PM Friday from the office. Return on Sunday.
We need to submit a supplemental funding request NOW before we can commit to attending the Miami tournament in January.
