The Voice of Edwin is the weekly newsletter of the Edwin Lawrence Debate Union at the University of Vermont, an endowed co-curricular program which trains students in debating and sponsors national competition and community events. Sometime between December 15 and 18 the LDU will make debate history as Vermont (in Burlington) and Cornell (in Ithaca) will be debating ach other live over the internet, and viewrs globally can tune in. This debate has been in the planning stages since last Spring.
UVM and the LDU have been pioneers in bringing debates and debate instruction to the world through internet video. The web site sponsored by the LDU [http://debate.uvm.edu/broadcast.html] has been featuring video content since last Spring, now with over 40 such items available. The LDU also broadcast many of the events at last summer's World Debate Institute live. Last week a small scale live broadcast was initiated from the debate offices as a test, and viewers on both coasts reported it was coming through loud and clear. This week's meeting with representatives of Apple computing, which has donated the use of one of their servers, paves the way for the next step, testing the Burlington-Ithaca connection.
Jethro Hayman[UVM '96], debate coach at Cornell, has been organizing the effort from the New York side. Stay tuned for topics, debaters, and precise times.
AND COMING IN 2000...
Look for the first international internet debate to be held between UVM and the English Speaking Union in London. The London side will feature the US Ambassador and members of the Cabinet. We are working on getting some notables of our own. As we say, stay tuned.
