News from Vermont Debate AKA The Voice of Edwin is the weekly newsletter of the Edwin Lawrence Debate Union at the University of Vermont, an endowed co-curricular program which trains students in debating and sponsors national competition and community events. The Lawrence Debate Union of the University of Vermont co-hosted the Second Annual International Debate Academy for university students held in Ormuz, Slovenia. The event was attended by 65 students from 13 countries and was also hosted by Z.I.P., the Slovenian national debate program. The program concluded last Saturday. The event seemed to be a huge success, with the students, trainers and organizers all very pleased with what took place. The students worked extremely hard. We had long and intense hours. Each student debated at least 11 times. We had two hours of lecture each morning, an exhibition debate, 2.5 hours of intense small group drills in the afternoon, and then a practice debate (with a lengthy critique) to end the day. The social activities seemed like fun, the food was good, and the rooms and meeting spaces were also excellent.
We had a wonderful session with the EU rep to Slovenia and the USA ambassador, with the debaters asking many pointed questions indicating their high levels of knowledge and seriousness. There was an excellent wine tasting event, a country exhibition, and a kitsch party, and more!
A six round tournament was held. Teams reaching the semifinals but not advancing included: Malovrh & Podlogar, Sweden & Slovenia, Karnar & Gostenchnik, Slovenia, Vlacic & Ivanusa, Slovenia, Marucic & Popovic, Croatia.
In the finals, the rankings were: 1. Grabrovec & Peter, Slovenia, 2. Serc & Novak, Slovenia, 3. Keller & Nedelskaya, Croatia & Russia, 4. Velev & Koychev, Bulgaria.
The top ten speakers were: 1. Novak, Slovenia 479, 2. Grabrovec, Slovenia 469, 3. Peter, Slovenia 468, 4. Keller, Croatia 466-314, 5. Podlogar, Slovenia 466-313, 6. Velev, Bulgaria 466-312, 7. Serc, Slovenia 466-311, 8. Glogovsek, Croatia 457-307, 9. Marucic, Croatia 457-305, 10. Koychev, Bulgaria 457-30. Congratulations to Samo Novak for being top speaker by TEN POINTS!
The race to make the semifinals was a hot one, with three teams missing on points.

Planning now begins for the 2005 International Debate Academy. News will be released as it is available. Any and all ideas for financial support are welcome.
It was particularly good to see two Slovene students and one Swedish student who attended the World Debate Institute in Vermont last summer do so well, Maja Malovrh, Grega Gostenchnik and Anja Serc.

COUNTDOWN TO PROGRAM #300 BEGINS
SATURDAY'S TAPING HAS BEEN POSTPONED BECAUSE OF UMASS TOURNAMENT.
Now in the 290s it is only a matter of time (and not a very long time) until Flashpoint reaches its 300th show. Ideas are being sought for how this show should be done. Let us know of any ideas.
