Middlebury continues on a Roll!

Novices: Jill Witney, first tournament, Abagail Trebilcock 5th Place, Jillian Marty 3rd Place | Varsity: Shane Egizi & Jen Knops, 5th Place

The LDU attended the Columbia University tournament this weekend, with 36 teams from 11 schools comprising the field in Varsity and Novice Debate. While not quite as successful as the weekend before, it was nevertheless a trip characterized by success.
In the novice division Jillianj Marty and Vilasa Campbell were 5-1 in prelims. In quarterfinals they defeated the US Naval Academy 3-0, and then lost to Entel and Marples of Rochester 3-0 in semifinals, to finish Third at the tournament. Abagail Trebilcock and Marissa Kelley were 3-3 in prelims, but because of their high speaker points made it to the quarterfinals, where they were defeated by Cornell 3-0 in what all present called a truly excellent debate. Nick Soverel and Jill Witney attended their veryn first debate tournament and brought back a respectable 2-4 record.
In Speaker awards for the novice division Vilasa Campbell was #2, Abagail Trebolcock was #6, Jillian Marty #7, Marissa Kelley #13.
In the varsity division Shane Egizi and Jen Knops were 4-2 in prelims and then lost 3-0 to Penn State in the quarterfinals. The Middlebury team (which is being sponsored through cooperation between Middlebury and UVM) of Mark Douglas and Grace Hardy were 4-2 and defeated New York University 2-1 in the quarterfinals, and then lost a hard fought debate against Penn State 2-1. The UVM teams of Lana Langswierdt & Lisbeth Robinson and Casey Gervais & Meredith Parmett were the #9 and #10 teams after prelims, just missing the quarterfinals.
In Speaker awards for the Varsity division Mark Douglas was #6, Lisbeth Robinson #16, Jen Knops #17, Shane Egizi #18, and Mredith Parmett #20.
Lisbeth Robinson's daughter Colby, along for the trip, received a special thank you award from Columbia for her help in running the tournament.
Sarah Snider, Jeff Nichelson, and Greta Lockwood were the coaches for the tournament while Alfred Snider administered tournament tabulation.

Meanwhile, down in Winston-Salem, North Carolina the varsity team of Aaron Fishbone and Shawn Wilkerson were accompanied by coach Jackie Massey. They posted a hard fought but disappointing 3-5 record.
