The regional competition
ended at NYU this last weekend with the younger debaters making a strong showing.
The stars were Mimi Supernaw and Mike McMahan. They were 5-1 in prelims and
were named the #4 and #2 speakers in the tournament. In quarterfinals they defeated
our friends Western Connecticut 3-0. In the semifinals they defeated Fordham
University 2-1. They faced Cornell in the finals, and lost a closely contested
2-1 decision to finish SECOND in the tournament.
Other novice teams were Emily Sanders & Dean Blumberg who finished at 3-3,
Ben Dzialo & Paula Zampieri 3-3, Jason Hitchcock & Bent Cardan at 2-4,
and Carly Lehrer & Eric Wright at 1-5. In the JV division Nick Landsman-Roos
& Eric Mates finished 3-3. All 3-3 teams missed the elimination rounds based
on speaker points.
New York City was, as always, a challenge to navigate around and park in, but
the crew was jolly and resolute.
Fantastic coaching jobs were turned in by Gordie Miller along with alumni Shane
Egizi, Jill Witney, and Jen Knops, who came to help and show support. We owe
them our gratitude.
There were several problems with the administration of the tournament, including
a two hour delay in the start of round one, but saying more than that would
simply be complaining.
Two LDU teams attended the tournament at Wake Forest University this last weekend and they did not achieve the "breakout" performance they were working for. Jillian Marty & Edwin Owusu had a record of 4-4 while Teresa Hill & Sheila Limprevil were 2-6. The four debaters, along with coaches Helen & Justin Morgan Parmett, also paid a visit to LDU alum Meredith Parmett who is teaching at a school in North Carolina, where they staged a demonstration debate. Pictures of that event will b coming in future weeks.

NO MORE TRADITIONAL PHOTOS AT THE LIVE BAIT MACHINE (BUT WE WILL TRY TO FIND
A NEW ONE)
After many years of
making the trip from Vermont to Kansas City for two tournaments, things have
changed. The traditional tournaments at UMKC and William Jewell will no longer
be held. But, as Bob Marley said, "when one door closes, another one opens."
The space has been filled by a new pair of tournaments designed to "swing"
together, but this time in Texas. January 3-5 there will be a tournament at
the University of North Texas in Denton (just north of Dallas) followed by a
tournament at the University of Texas at Dallas on January 6-8. One major change
for UVM will be that this will no longer be a driving trip. Coaches agreed that
the additional distance was simply too much and that in the interests of safety
it should become a flying trip.
TEAMS: Marty & Owusu, Massey & Sanders, Supernaw & McMahan.
JUDGES/COACHES: Helen & Justin Morgan Parmett, Snider, Miller.
