The LDU attended the
Binghamton University tournament this weekend, with 47 teams from 13 schools
comprising the field in Junior Varsity and Novice Debate. The Novice division
is the Eastern USA Fall Novice Championship. The squad put together a 45-31
record and got back to its traditional winning ways.
In novice debate, four of UVM's six teams reached the quarterfinals. Jillian
Marty and Vilasa Campbell were 5-1 in prelims and then had the bad fortune
to face another UVM team in the quarterfinals, David Moss and Adam Nilson
who had a 4-2 rercord, with Marty and Campbell advancing because of their
superior prelim record. In the semifinals, Marty & Campbell defeated Rochester
3-0 to move onto the Finals. Meanwhile, Marisa Kelley and Abagail Trebilcock
were 5-1 in prelims and debated Rochester TB and defeated them 2-1, then moved
on to the Semis where they defeated Cornell 3-0, propelling them into the
Finals. But lo and behold, the two teams meeting in the Finals were both from
UVM, so they were declared co-champions. In other novice action, Greg Martin
and Jon Marvin were 4-2 in replims both lost their quarterfinal debate to
Rochester 3-0. Dan Pesaturo and Wendy O'Connor were 3-3 in prelims while Brian
Hurley and Claudia Greenman were 2-4 losing two contested decisions.
Six UVM novices were in the Top 20 individual speakers, including #3 Jillian
Marty, #4 Vilasa Campbell, #9 Abigail Trebilcock, #11 Claudia Greenman, #16
Jon Marvin, #19 Greg Martin, and #20 Adam Nilson.
In the Junior Varsity division Lisbeth Robinson and Lana Langswierdt qualified
for the quarterfinals and then lost 3-0 to Cornell. Meanwhile Meredith Parmett
and Casey Gervais were 3-3 and Eric Chartan and Steph McDonald as well as
Jen Knops and Shane Egizi were 2-4.
Five UVM JV debaters were in the Top 20 individual speakers, including #9
Lisbeth Robinson, #16 Casey Gervais, #17 Meredith Parmett, #18 Lana Langswierdt,
and #19 Jen Knops.
UVM has been helping Middlebury College start a policy debate team, mostly
in cooperation with Mark Douglas who is an NYUDL alumni. This was the first
weekend two Middlebury students debated together as Mark was joined by Grace
Hardy (a novice), and they did very well in the Junior Varsoity division.
They were 4-2 in prelims and then defeated 6-0 Cornell 2-1 in the quarterfinals
before losing in the semis 2-1 to eventual JV tournament champion Columbia.
Thus, Middlebury got their first unilateral trophy placing THIRD. Mark Douglas
was the #6 individual speaker. The Lawrence endowment at Middlebury is
now back at work in policy debate!
Even UVM judges were winning awards. Coach Sarah Snider emerged from the balloting
by contestants as the #2 judge in the tournament, being narrowly edged out
by UVM alumni Jethro Hayman who now is the Director of Forensics at Cornell,
so it was still in the family.
Coiaches and debaters alike attributed this success to changes made in the
preparation sequences three weeks ago as well as hard work by all involved.
