The LDU was in Oklahoma City last weekend for the 20th Joe C. Jackson tournament held by the University of Central Oklahoma. Long an annual destination for the LDU, the tournament regularly features some of the best debate teams from the Midwest. Tremendous hospitality was once more provided by Doug Duke, Jason Stone, and Bryan Gaston as well as the UCO debaters. The tournament brought awards and a winning records to bring home after several weekends of frustration by the more experienced debaters.
Lana Langsweirdt and Jen Knops brought their highly developed set of critical arguments and found many judges highly complementary of them. Big wins with high points in rounds five and six over the University of Texas (Allan & Petersin) and the University of Texas at Dallas (Courville & Easley) propelled them into the elimination rounds for the second time this year. In the elimination debate against the University of Texas (Apel & Brar) that produced a deeply divided panel that was 2-1 for Texas. Jake Meany and Jillian Marty were 2-4.
Teresa Hill and Brian Cole entered in the extremely competitive junior varsity division. They had a 5-1 record in the preliminary debates. In the quarterfinals they defeated Kansas State University (Flagg & Stout) 3-1. In the semifinals they were defeated by the University of Missouri at Kansas City (Culp & Gordon) 3-0. Brian was recognized as the #3 speaker in the division and Teresa Hill was #9. Brian Cole, who has openly confessed to wanting to be a debate coach, received many positive messages from graduate programs with debate assistantships who were at the tournament.
The tournament also provided
a great opportunity to be reunited with former LDU coach Jackie Massey.
He offered extremely valuable insight into arguments, teams, and judges
that contributed to overall team success. He will rejoin us again for the
KC Swing. The tournament was also attended by coaches Snider and Parmett.
