from Vermont Debate AKA The Voice of Edwin is the weekly newsletter
of the Edwin Lawrence Debate Union at the University of Vermont, an
endowed co-curricular program which trains students in debating and
sponsors national competition and community events. The newsletter is
published every Tuesday during the school year and infrequently at other

The annual trip to Oklahoma
City had its share of delights. There was competitive success and the hospitality
of our hosts was remarkable and pleasurable. Some of the best things we build
and experience are the bonds and friendships that get built up over the years.
In the competitive vein, Edwin Owusu and Jillian Marty were propelled past the
octafinals and into the quarterfinals after their clutch victory over the University
of texas in round six. 3-2 coming in and paired against 4-1 Texas, UVM had to
have a win. the Longhorns went for topicality in 2NR and it took the judge,
Dr. Brian Lain of the University of North Texas, almost 30 minutes to make a
decision, but UVM got the ballot. High speaker points during the prelims meant
that UVM avoided the partial octafinal the next morning and advanced to quarters.
In quarters they met Southern Illinois University and lost a 2-1 decision, losing
judges Louis Petit of Missouri and Cody Morrow of North Texas while gaining
the ballot of Phil Samuels of Emporia State. Jillian Marty was named the #6
individual debater at the tournament. Meanwhile Teresa Hill and Sheila Limprevil
had a rough weekend, finishing 1-5 in the varsity division, while Eric Mates
and Kayce Massey were 2-4 in the JV division.
In a more personal vein, the hospitality and community were excellent. Former
LDU coach jackie massey is now the director of debate at the University of Oklahoma,
and opened his huge home to the squad and also prepared delicious meals for
them. Jason Stone, tournament host from the University of Central Oklahoma,
also provided excellent hospitality, with shuttles and perks galore, as well
as waiving entry fees in exchange for UVM coach Snider's help in tabulating
the tournament results. Stone and all the UCO debaters have become tight with
the UVM crew through their participation in the summer World Debate Institute.
There was a profoundly sad note on the weekend, as Jackie Massey's father passed
away on Saturday after a long illness. The whole squad sends its condolences
to Jackie and his family at this difficult time. We were glad we could be there
to lend a little extra strength to what is already a very strong person and
family.
The first semester competition closes with two trips on one weekend. Helen & Justin Morgan Parmett will take two teams to Wake Forest, departure is 3:30 PM from the debate office. Brian Cole will be driver for the Wake drive to manchester for less expensive flights. The team will also present a public debate on Friday at a middle school in North Carolina where LDU alum Meredith Parmett is teaching.
The crew to NYU will leave from the office at 5:30 A, FRIDAY MORNING! Coaches Snider, Miller, Witney, Knops, and Egizi will take seven teams to NYU, including Landsman-Roos & Mates as well as Reimer and Muradian in JV, and 5 novice teams, including Supernaw & McMahan, Wright & Lehrer, Cardan & Hitchcock, Dzialo & Zampieri, and Sanders & Blumberg.

Central Europe is becoming a hotbed of debating, and the LDU is there to light the fire. LDU coach Snider has been invited by several European debate programs to hold a debate workshop in Ljubljana, Slovenia over the Thanksgiving break for university students under the auspices of the World Debate Institute, UVM's summer training program. The program will last from 11/24-28. Approximately 50 students will be attending the residential program. The hope is to expand it next year and make it an annual event.
