SMASHING SUCCESS AT BINGHAMTON

Helen Morgan & Peter Winfield with awards
UVM #1 & #2 Junior Varsity Teams in the East
Novice Debaters Rake in Awards - 63-44 Record
Binghamton Univerisy hosted the CEDA East Regional Fall Championships this last weekend, and UVM not only attended in force but put togerther an extremely impressive competitive showing. Once again UVM had the largest squad BUT ALSO the best percentage record of any school.
The LDU took FIRST and SECOND place in the Junior Varsity division, as Helen Morgan and Peter Winfield on one side of the bracket and Jaime Robertson and Anthony Pagan on the other side of the bracket kept on winning until they met in the final round, where there was no debate. The astounding part was that one member of each of these teams was technically still a novice debater. Jaime and Anthony did it the hard way, losing their first three debates before winning their last five debates to share the title with Helen and Peter. Aaron Fishbone and Mark Douglas (Middlebury) were 3-3 in the JV division. Peter Winfield was the 6th speaker.
In the novice division SIX UVM teams were rated in the top 16 and advanced into the elimnination rounds after six preliminary debates. Two teams survived the first eliminaion round before losing in the quarterfinals, including Heather Towne & Allana Alexander as well as Meredith Parmett & Casey Gervais, who both ended up finishing Fifth in the novice division. Team bowing out in the octafinal round included Knops & Johnson, Miller & Robionson, Malley & Weidhorn, and Mullany & Chartan. UVM had seven of the top 15 speakers in the novice division. Tim Miller was First, Heather Towne was Fourth, Steve Gilpatric was Fifth, Allana Alexander was Sixth, Casey Gervais was Eighth, Liz Robinson was Thirteenth, and Jordan Clark was Fifteenth.
Only one UVM team had a record of less than 3-3, and they were only 2-4.
UVM Coach/Judge Rachel Hewitt finished second in the Outstanding Critic category.
LDU DEBATE FOR DIVERSITY DAY A SUCCESS
The LDU staged a public debate last week as part of "Building Our Community" Day at UVM last Wednesday. The debate took place in Ira Allen Chapel, with the topic, "Resolved: that substantial legal remedies should be adopted to compensate for white privilege." Aaron Fishbone and Peter Winfield were the affirmative, while Anthony Pagan and Helen Morgan were the negative. It was a spirited contest, with the cross examination periods being of special interest to the audience. The affirmative exposed the many elements of white privilege in modern America and called for the government toi do more, perhaps pass a new Civil Rights Act as was done in 1964. The negative advocated the "racial realism" of Derrick Bell [the law only hides oppression and quiesces the oppressed] and the ideas of bell hooks that all oppression is one [focusing just on race divides us against each other]. This provoked a lively discussion lasting long after the debate was over, with people even following the debaters over to Huber House to continue the discussion.
The video of the debate will soon be available at Debate Central Broadcasting [http://debate.uvm.edu/broadcast.html].
