After two tough weekends
Vermont debate scored early, often, and late at West Point. In a large and well-attended
tournament featuring 90 teams LDU success came in all three divisions.
Leading the way were the two varsity teams, Edwin Owusu & Jillian Marty
along with Teresa Hill and Colin Kern. Edwin & Jillian were 5-1 in prelims.
They defeated Boston College 2-1 in octafinals, UMKC 3-0 in quarterfinals (being
coached by UVM alum Sarah Snider), before losing to NYU 3-0 in the semifinals,
thus finishing THIRD. Meanwhile, Colin & Teresa were 4-2 in prelims, defeated
the University of Florida 3-2 in octafinals, defeated a Georgetown/Catholic
University hybrid team (being coached by UVM alum Aaron Fishbone) 3-0, but then
lost their semifinal debate 3-0 to Boston College, thus finishing THIRD. The
teams were very close to a close out of one of the most prestigious tournaments
in the East. The 13-4 varsity record was an excellent showing.
In the Junior Varsity division the hybrid team of Miosotis perez (Middlebury)
and nick landsman-Roos (UVM) were 4-2 in prelims. They defeated St. lawrence
2-1 in octafinals before losing to Rochester in the quarterfinals. Nick Landsman-Roos
was the seventh speaker in the division. Kayce massey and Eric Mates did not
clear to the elimination rounds.
In the novice division every team made progress and there were some breakthroughs.
Mike Harrington and Zoe Anderson were 4-2 and reached the octafinal round, where
they lost. Mike was the tenth speaker and Zoe was the eighth. Meanwhile a team
that began preparation on Monday, attending their first tournament ever, had
considerable success. Suzie Greenbaum and Michael McMahan were 3-3 in prelims
but had good speaking scores so made it into the double octafinal debate, where
they defeated Rochester 3-0. In the octafinals they lost to Liberty 3-0 but
it was one of the more impressive premier showings in LDU history. They went
from joining the team on Monday to winning an elimination rounds 3-0 on Saturday.
There was also a general strong showing among the novices, with the teams of
Emily Sanders & Dean Blumberg along with Carly Lehrer and Eric Wright just
missed the elimination rounds by a few speaker points. All novice teams improved.
The overall record for the weekend was 37-33, getting the LDU back on the winning
track. Five of ten teams reached the elimination rounds and seven teams had
a .500 or better record.
