from Vermont Debate AKA The Voice of Edwin is the weekly newsletter
of the Edwin Lawrence Debate Union at the University of Vermont, an
endowed co-curricular program which trains students in debating and
sponsors national competition and community events. The newsletter is
published every Tuesday during the school year and infrequently at other

The young varsity squad continued
to face challenges but continued to work and debate hard as the Harvard
tournament, normally the most competitive tournament of the Fall, offered
more lessons and learning experiences. Jake Meany and Jillian Marty had
a 3-5 record and Sheila Limprevil and Edwin Owusu had a 2-6 record. The
teams remained at the tournament throughout the day of eliminations and
watched all of the debates, scouting arguments, evidence, and techniques.
BLITZ OF TRAVEL TO FINISH FALL SEMESTER
This coming weekend
we attend the UNITED STATES MILITARY ACADEMY AT WEST POINT TOURNAMENT on the
banks of the Hudson River. The LDU plans to send a huge contingent to the
tournament, and all debaters should gear up for the trip. NOTE: WE WILL LEAVE
ON FRIDAY MORNING AS THERE WILL BE ONE ROUND ON FRIDAY NIGHT.
VAN #1 WILL LEAVE AT 9 AM, OTHER VANS WILL LEAVE AT 10 AM. JEN KNOPS WILL
TAKE HERSELF, ABIGAIL, OLIVER AT 11:30. EVERYONE MUST BE PROMPT AND READY
TO LEAVE ON TIME!
FIFTEEN Teams signed up include: Limprevil & Owusu, Bryce & Marty,
Welch & Reimer, Massey & Vaillancourt, Suyarkulova & Balas, Kern
& O'Connor, Knops & Langsweirdt, Cole & Hill, Pettrone & Simpadian,
Friel & Steere, Smith & Mates, Rounds & Melander, Mukherjee &
Malone, Matthew & Ptalis, Varela & Velez. Coach/judges include Snider,
Morgan, Parmett, Hoag, McDonald, Witney, Wilkerson, Miller. Perhaps Adam Gana
or Rodrigo Rojas can also judge for us.
The second weekend in November finds the LDU at the JOE JACKSON INVITATIONAL in Oklahoma City. Long a common travel stop for the LDU, there will be three teams and two coaches. The teams will include Brian Cole & Teresa Hill, Jillian Marty & Jake Meany, and Lana Langsweirdt & Jen Knops. Coaches will include Parmett and Snider.
The third weekend in November UVM will be at two different tournaments, one in Binghamton, NY at Binghamton University and the other in North Carolina at Wake Forest University. At Binghamton the LDU will enter as many of its teams as possible, especially younger teams. Coach Snider will accompany the group. Meanwhile, three (maybe four) varsity teams will go to Wake Forest to one of the year's largest varsity tournaments, accompanied by Helen Morgan and Justin Parmett.
Other travel with LDU connections includes a trip by coach Snider to the University of Kansas for their "Debate Reunion." He coached there in the late 1970's and has been pestered by his debaters to return. Snider continues his globe-trotting at the end of November. He has accepted an invitation to be flown to Chile and hosted for a series of workshops and training sessions there. The trip is sponsored by the Corporacion Cultural de lo Barnechea, Universidad Diego Portales, and United Airlines. A trip to Venezuela is now confirmed for December, sponsored by Proctor & Gamble and Universidad Catolico Andres Bello.

to, and implement, one or more of the following: The Comprehensive Nuclear
Test Ban Treaty; The Kyoto Protocol; The Rome Statute on the International
Criminal Court; The Second Optional Protocol to the International Covenant
on Civil and Political Rights aiming at the Abolition of the Death Penalty;
The treaty between the United States of America and the Russian federation
on Strategic Offensive Reductions, if not ratified by the United States.

CAREER PLANS (IF ANY): To continue being a debate coach until I learn my lesson.
LEVEL OF DEBATE COMPETITION: Old Timer League
FAVORITE MUSIC IN THE VAN: Eclectic mix of reggae, trance, lounge, oldies,
sound effects, and snippets from Dr. Who.
PET PEEVE: Not thinking before acting or speaking; not putting other people
in the decision equation.
I AM GRATEFUL FOR: Edwin Lawrence, Doc Huber, and all those who have allowed
me to be their coach.
WORST MOMENT IN DEBATE: None stands out. Perhaps I don't want to remember!
FAVORITE TEAM TO DEBATE: People with bad positions in a public debate about
something that means a great deal to me. No mercy!
FAVORITE TEAM TO BEAT: Any team coached by an LDU alum, and especially by
my daughter.
FAVORITE JUDGE: Whoever has a ballot.
FAVORITE TOURNAMENT: The KC Swing, because I love to watch our debaters grow!
FAVORITE THING ABOUT DEBATE: It always changes, I always learn new things,
it always changes me.
LEAST FAVORITE THING ABOUT DEBATE: Banquets at tournaments, bad speeches,
rubber chicken, etc.
FAVORITE DEBATE SPEECH: The 2AR.
MOST INSPIRATIONAL PERSON ON THE TEAM (AND WHY): The least experienced debater
who, facing difficulties, will not give up.
WHAT DEBATE MEANS TO ME: Debate is my life, and my life is debate. Thus, a
full answer to this would take far too much space.
MY PERSONAL CHALLENGE: To increase my patience and to be less cranky.
SAY WHATEVER YOU WANT: I always do. How about these: regime change begins
at home; disarmament begins at home.
