Apple Computers, long a favorite of LDU students and coaches, has decided to show concrete support for the LDU program to pioneer live, telepresence debating using the internet. Students in distant locations can use currently available "streaming media" software to see each other and hear each other through their computers hooked up to the internet. Apple has delivered to UVM Computer and Instructional Technology an Apple G3 OSX Server complete with necessary software. This server will allow the LDU to try and use Apple's QuickTime system for upcoming internet debates, the first in the world which general audiences will be able to view. The other operating system under consideration is RealMedia. LDU Director Snider commented, "We have long been Apple enthusiasts, so it is a great pleasure to have Apple come on board for this project and we look forward to demonstrating internet debating using QuickTime." He cautioned, however, that results are the true test of which software to use, but that he already preferred the QuickTime player.
The first globally public internet debates have already been scheduled. In late November or early December UVM will debate Cornell University. Following that a UVM-London debate has been scheduled for February with the cooperation of the English Speaking Union, an organization which coordinates public speaking activities in over 65 countries.
