(L-R) Marvin & Martin with Massey - Yadav & Sillin - Parmett with
Fishbone

(L-R) Hoag & Sweeney - Robinson & Langswierdt - Lockwood with Greenman
UVM hosted the Logic
& Love Debates this last weekend. The tournament had novice and junior
varsity divisions only in an attempt to give extra opportunities to younger
debaters. 42 teams from the East attended the tournament.
The good news was that three UVM teams made it to the elimination rounds.
Brian Hurley & Claudia Greenman were 4-2, won their octafinal debate,
before losing to Rochester in quarters, thus finishing fifth. Jillian Marty
and Vilasa Campbell were also 4-2 and then lost in octafinals, as did Sanjeev
Yadav and Nat Sillin, who were also 4-2.
Casey Gervais and Charles Hoag won speaker awards in the JV division, as did
Nat Sillin in the novice division.
The bad news was that two UVM teams missed the elimination rounds by a combined
total of 5 points, and three JV teams just barely missed, including Meredith
Parmett & Casey Gervais, Lana Langswierdt & Lisbeth Robinson, and
Charles Hoag & Matt Sweeney in JV, as well as David Moss & Adam Nilson
and Marisa Kelly & Abigail Trebilcock in novice.
The tournament featured the homecoming of many LDU past heroes - including
national semifinalist Jethro Hayman (now coaching at Cornell), two time All
American Max Schnurer (now coaching at Marist), LDU debater and coach Jeff
Nichelson (now a television personality), past Novice National Champion Erica
Albin (now an attorney), and ex-debater Sam Young (now a web designer).
The squad record for the weekend was 35-35.
