The University of Vermont scored unprecedented victories at the University of Rochester debate tournament this weekend. UVM had the largest and the most successful squad at the tournament, attended by 17 schools. The LDU was awarded the Grand Sweepstakes Award. Sarah Snider and Helen Morgan were 4-2 in the varsity preliminary debates, but then avenged both of their losses by beating Cornell [Melton-Miller] 3-0 in the semifinal round and 3-0 [Kronk-Cole] in the final round, thus winning the tournament! Sarah Snider was the Top Speaker and Helen Morgan was Fifth Speaker. Mark Douglas of Middlebury joined the squad this weekend, and he and Greta Lockwood debated in the varsity division.
In the Junior Varsity division Aaron Fishbone and Daniel Serfer were 6-0 in preliminary debates, then defeated West Virginia in semifinals before losing to Cornell in the final round, thus finishing Second at the tournament.
But it was in the novice division where the depth of the squad really made itself apparent. UVM entered 13 novice teams after a great recruiting Fall, and 10 of them reached the elimination rounds. Only one out of the 13 teams did not have a .500 record, and they were only 2-4. Allana Alexander and Heather Towne were 4-2 in the preliminary debates, and advanced 3-0 over another UVM team in octafinals. In quarterfinals they defeated the US Military Academy 3-0. In semifinals they defeated Cornell University 3-0. In the finals round they lost 3-0 to Cornell. Other novice teams also scored well. Anthony Pagan and Steph McDonald were 4-2 in preliminary debates and then defeated Cornell 2-1 in octafinals before losing 3-0 to another Cornell team in quarterfinals. Peter Winfield and Jordan Clark were also 4-2, then advanced over another Vermont team before bowing in the quaterfinals 3-0. Other novice teams teaching the octafinals included Casey Gervais & Meredith Parmett, Mariellen Jewers & Adam Zerenner, Amanda Henchel & Jessica Thompson, Tim Miller & Rob Bernstein, Shannon Dempsey & Lisbeth Robinson, and Ronshagen & Reynolds. Other teams included Gilp[atric & Luntz, Etherington & Sullivan, and Weidhorn & Malley.
This trip featured the use of a leased bus along with a professional driver. We loved it.
