of the Edwin Lawrence Debate Union at the University of Vermont, an
endowed co-curricular program which trains students in debating and
sponsors national competition and community events. The newsletter is

Casual snapshot: Parmett, Morgan, Varela, Velez |
Over 110 people from ten schools gathered on the UVM campus last weekend for a regional tournament, the 2002 Logic & Love debate tournament. The tournament featured strong performances by the University of Rochester squad, who closed out open and won novice, and the Binghamton squad, who were strong overall and finished second in novice.
UVM had its share of laurels
as well.
Teresa Hill and Brian Cole were 4-1 in prelims before losing in semifinals
to the Rochester team them had beaten in prelims. Teresa Hill was 3rd speaker,
Jen Knops 4th, and Brian Cole 8th. Lana Langsweirdt & Jen Knops as well
as Jill Witney & Shana Bryce debated in the open division.
The novice division had many strong UVM performances. The teams of Tim Reimer
& Christine Welch as well as Carlos Varela & Leo Velez both had
4-1 records and advanced through the quarterfinals before both losing in
the semifinal's. Ryan O'Connor & Amy Vaillancourt were 4-1 and lots
in quarterfinals. Kayce Massey & Chris Pettrone were also 4-1 but met
Carlos & Leo in quarterfinals. Eric Mates & Whitney Smith were 4-1
but just missed the elimination rounds on points. Other teams making progress
since their last outing included Oliver Matthews & Sarah Ptalis, Ani
Mukherjee & Michael Malone, and Cody Rounds & Lindsey Melander.
Carlos Varela was the 5th speaker, Sarah Ptalis was the 7th speaker, and
Tim Reimer was 9th.
Special awards were presented to Anoop Prabhu of Marist College (Outstanding Critic Award) and Maxwell Schnurer of Marist College (Friend of UVM Debate).
The squad record for the weekend
was 34-27.
BLITZ OF TRAVEL TO FINISH FALL SEMESTERThe LDU schedule is crammed with tournaments from now until December.
This weekend is the
CAPITAL CITY DEBATES at Catholic University in Washington, DC. Three teams
will attend: Langsweirdt-Knops, Cole-Hill, Marty-Meany. Coaches will include
Morgan, Parmett, and Snider.
LEAVE OFFICE AT 6:15 AM FRIDAY MORNING FOR A DRIVE TO WASHINGTON IN A VAN
THAT IS SOME COLOR OTHER THAN WHITE. We will return sometime late Monday,
or perhaps even Tuesday early AM.
Next comes the HARVARD UNIVERSITY TOURNAMENT in Cambridge, Mass. One of the toughest tournaments of the year and one of the most traditional, UVM hopes to enter two teams.
The first weekend in November the UNITED STATES MILITARY ACADEMY AT WEST POINT TOURNAMENT will take place on the banks of the Hudson River. The LDU plans to send a huge contingent to the tournament, and all debaters should gear up for the trip. NOTE: WE WILL LEAVE ON FRIDAY MORNING AS THERE WILL BE ONE ROUND ON FRIDAY NIGHT.
The second weekend in November finds the LDU at the JOE JACKSON INVITATIONAL in Oklahoma City. Long a common travel stop for the LDU, there will be three teams and two coaches. The teams will include Brian Cole & Teresa Hill, Jillian Marty & Jake Meany, and Lana Langsweirdt & Jen Knops. Coaches will include Parmett and Snider.
The third weekend in November UVM will be at two different tournaments, one in Binghamton, NY at Binghamton University and the other in North Carolina at Wake Forest University. At Binghamton the LDU will enter as many of its teams as possible, especially younger teams. Coach Snider will accompany the group. Meanwhile, three varsity teams will go to Wake Forest to one of the year's largest varsity tournaments, accompanied by Helen Morgan and Justin Parmett.
The final weekend before Thanksgiving the LDU will be in New York City for the Columbia tournament to finish off the Fall semester. Teams who haven't yet had enough debate will be entered in the GOTHAM CITY DEBATES.
Other travel with LDU connections includes a trip by coach Snider to the University of Kansas for their "Debate Reunion." He coached there in the late 1970's and has been pestered by his debaters to return. Snider continues his globe-trotting at the end of November. He has accepted an invitation to be flown to Chile and hosted for a series of workshops and training sessions there. The trip is sponsored by the Corporacion Cultural de lo Barnechea, Universidad Diego Portales, and United Airlines. A trip to Venezuela is also rumored for December.

DEBATE ON USA INVASION OF IRAQThe event was held
on October 10, 2002, 8 PM, Lafayette 108. Rob Hunt was the coordinator. The
Topic was: USA military action against Iraq is justified. The Affirmative
was: Teresa Hill & Shana Bryce. The Negative was: Charles Hoag & Tim
Reimer. The turnout was good but could have been better. The performances
by the youngest members of the teams, Tim and Shana, were reported as strong
and very promising.
TOPIC AND TRAVEL2002-2003 topic:
Resolved that the United States Federal Government should ratify or accede
to, and implement, one or more of the following: The Comprehensive Nuclear
Test Ban Treaty; The Kyoto Protocol; The Rome Statute on the International
Criminal Court; The Second Optional Protocol to the International Covenant
on Civil and Political Rights aiming at the Abolition of the Death Penalty;
The treaty between the United States of America and the Russian federation
on Strategic Offensive Reductions, if not ratified by the United States.
