The Lawrence Debate Union remains very busy last week and this as preparations for a flock of tournaments accelerated in the midst of many other activities.
SPEAK
OUT
With the sponsorship of the UN Foundation and the International Debate Education Association the LDU sponsored a speak out on campus last thursday afternoon. While not as many people spoke as we usually like, the discourse was thoughtful and provocative. Brady Fletcher and the SPEAKS Living & Learning program helped put on the event. Over 150 signatures were gathered from attendees. Additional such events are difficult given the approaching winter, but an additional speak out will probably take place in the spring.
HISTORY CHANNEL AUDITION
LDU members recorded an audition video for the History Channel in an attempt to win a spot as one of two college debate teams that will debate on a nationally broadcast edition of the History Center. Stephanie Kimerer, Mike McMahan and Brady Fletcher were selected from those students auditioning. If selected these three students will fly to NYC for taping. This is part of the on-going debate related promotion that the History Channel is using for its upcoming mini-series on the Crusades. For more information about all of the events go to http://www.historychannel.com/crusades/ . LDU director Snider has served as the primary consultant for this event, but he added that "I won't be selecting the teams, as I might be biased in favor of our students. Executives of the History Channel will do that."
INTERNET DEBATE BEING ORGANIZED
The LDU is organizing an Internet streaming video debate with the support of the UN Foundation and the International Debate Education Association. The debate will be on the topic of UN efforts to stop terrorism and will feature four LDU students. The debate will be scheduled soon and then webcast live from the Debate Central live webcast site. The debate will then be archived for on-demand viewing. The LDU will receive a $500 grant from the UN Foundation and IDEA once the event has been completed.
