from Vermont Debate AKA The Voice of Edwin is the weekly newsletter
of the Edwin Lawrence Debate Union at the University of Vermont, an
endowed co-curricular program which trains students in debating and
sponsors national competition and community events. The newsletter is

UVM's role in spreading debate
globally advanced another step this weekend in Krakow, Poland. The International
Debate Education Association held its annual conference [http://207.21.244.48/events/krakow/]
entitled "Debate and Argumentation:Opening Minds, Borders & Societies."
Attended by representatives of over 35 nations, the conference also featured
a "Summit" for international debate leaders to share ideas and
create opportunities for cooperation. A lot happened, and here are a few
highlights:
* Kazakhstan presented their program whereby debaters work as interns for
members of parliament, the debaters take legislation and debate it amongst
themselves, and then propose changes in the legislation as well as urge
acceptance or rejection. A strong ,majority of advice from the debaters
has been adopted by the legislators.
* Bulgaria presented their program whereby debaters follow city councils
and regional legislative bodies and then present awards to politicians who
are the best models of strong public debate.
*Estonia presented their program whereby their pick a significant national
problem that is NOT being addressed (in their case, corruption) and then
hold a series of workshops and debates on the issue to mobilize public support
and legislative action on that issue, eventually debating in front of policy
makers.
* UVM presented its plans for holding a summer debate institute in China
to jump start debating there, as well as a number of other ongoing programs
for supporting debate in Spanish and organizing debates over the Internet.
UVM specifically made a number
of important connections that will pay off in the future, and a few of them
include:
* Japan will send an experienced faculty member (Saturo Aounuma) to WDI
next summer to serve as faculty, and he will also attend the China program
in late August.
* Mongolia and Kazakhstan will also support the program and will also send
students to WDI in Vermont next summer.
* Extended and ongoing cooperation has begun with the debate program in
Slovenia.
* Kazakhstan, Slovenia, and Uzbekistan agreed to host the "Around-the-world
Debate tour" UVM is currently designing for December, 2003-January,
2004.
* UVM will develop a data base of graduate assistantships in debate related
areas in the USA for outstanding foreign debate graduates to apply for.
UVM was represented by Alfred Snider, as well as former UVM debater Maxwell Schnurer. Former coaches John Meany of Claremont, David Berube of South Carolina, and former debater Jethro Hayman of Cornell have also been very involved in international activities with IDEA countries.
It would be wrong not to mention
the impact on Snider and Schnurer of their visit to Auschwitz and Birkenau
death camps near Krakow. Both were moved to tears on many occasions, and
both experienced increased determination to use the tools of reason and
discourse against the mindset of weapons and death. A more complete trip
report will be coming in future weeks.
UVM will host a small tournament this weekend with a novice and an open division. A strong regional attendance is expected.
