The university of Vermont kicked off its East region debate schedule last weekend with considerable success. Eight of the ten teams attending reached the elimination rounds, the top speakers in varsity and junior varsity were from UVM, the second place junior varsity team and the third place varsity team were from UVM. Most importantly, a new crop of debaters was introduced to the activity and seemed excited about more debating and more tournaments to come.
Jillian Marty and Edwin Owusu finished third in the varsity division. Jillian was the top speaker at the tournament and Edwin was third. Miosotis perez (of Middlebury College) debated with UVM's Nick Landsman-Roos and finished fifth in the varsity division. Sheila Limprevil and Teresa Hill finished ninth in varsity. Sheila was the tenth individual speaker. Colin Kern and Carlos Varela were also tied for ninth in varsity, as were last year's novices Timm Reimer and Leo Velez. There was a separate set of speaker awards for students who were eligible as junior varsity, and Nick landsman-Roos was top speaker, Eric Mates was fourth, and Colin Kern was sixth. In a separate break-out debate for the top two junior varsity eligible teams not reaching the varsity elimination rounds, Eric Mates and Kayce Massey finished second. Nikki Muradian and Amy Myers also debated in the varsity division.
In novice debate UVM had three teams entered, with many more to come at future tournaments. Zoe Anderson and Mike Harrington as well as Pat Mayer and Mimi Supernaw made the elimination rounds but lost and thus finished ninth. Ben Dzialo and Paula Zampieri did well at their first tournament but did not clear to the elimination rounds.
UVM coach Snider received a strange award at the assembly, a genuine shepherds crook from Ireland. It had something to do with leading a flock. However, if UVM debaters anything they are NOT sheep.
October 18 & 19 UVM hosts the 2003 Robert Huber Memorial Debates.
Some 50+ teams from all over the East are expected to attend. Plans are moving
ahead for the tournament, including:
-Delicious food prepared by parents, supporters, and debaters to delight the
attendees, just as we have done for the last few years.
-Six rounds of top competition followed by elimination round debates.
-Administration by UVM coaches Justin and Helen Morgan Parmett, tabulation and
pairings by Gordie Miller and UVM alumni Maxwell Schnurer of Marist College,
and exciting night life provided by our many social directors.
-Unusual and provocative awards, as is our custom.
-A huge number of UVM teams competing.
