The Lawrence Debate Union seeks to engage the world, the nation, and the community in a continuous, intellectual, critical process through communication and advocacy. We seek a world of open discourse where weapons replace words. This last week there were numerous examples of this commitment.
New York City: LDU staff and students ran the tabulation room and judged debates at the New York Urban Debate League tournament at Louis Brandeis High School in Manhattan. Over 260 debaters and 110 judges gathered for the event. Many of these students (over 80) had attended the 17th World Debate Institute held at UVM this last summer.
South Burlington: LDU staff and students worked with the Vermont Debate & Forensic League at their workshop held at South Burlington HS last week. Over 65 students attended.
Williston: LDU student debaters are working with middle school students who are learning to debate. Regular weekly visits are scheduled.
Ithaca-London-Burlington: Live Internet video debates between Cornell University and UVM in December and the English Speaking Union in London and UVM in February have been announced. These will serve as demonstrations of the new audio-video system for telepresence debating which the LDU is sponsoring along with UVM CIT and our new partner, Apple .
China-Burlington: Coach Terry McKnight met with a delegation from the People's Republic of China last week at the suggestion of Asian Studies Professor Juefei Wang in hopes of creating a cooperative debating relationship with universities in China.
475 Main Street, UVM: 12 debaters had their first practice debates this last weekend and formally staked their claim to a place in the realm of reason.
