The longest trip of the year [ten days] continued as Helen Morgan, Sarah Snider, and coach Jackie Massey reached South Carolina. Their trip began at the National Round Robin at the University of South Carolina where the top 16 teams in the nation were invited to compete. Unfortunately, Continental and US Airways conspired to lose UVM's evidence. Round one saw a victory even without evidence, but round two (on the negative) was much more difficult, and there was an unexpected loss to Arizona State, who refused to reschedule the debate for that evening when the evidence would be there. Thanks a lot, Sun Devils. They finished at the Round Robin with a 3-4 record, although it included an impressive win over West Georgia.
They were then joined by Greta Lockwood, Peter Winfield, Aaron Fishbone, and Daniel Serfer for the South Carolina tournament, featuring a very tough competitive draw. Sarah and Helen were 4-2 in prelims, winning their sixth round when they were 3-2 against a 4-1 Emory team. In the octafinals they were affirmative against old nemesis Georgetown and won on a 2-1 decision. They then lost to West Georgia in the quarterfinals to finish FIFTH at the tournament and return home with a winning record for the trip.
Serfer and Fishbone were 3-3 in a small junior varsity division and finished FIFTH. Lockwood and Winfield had tough sledding in the varsity division but debated hard and learned a lot.
The LDU continues to engage the community and the world about ideas, issues, and the benefits of actively debating both. LDU students and staff will be participating in:
9-30 Vermont Debate and Forensic League Workshop, South Burlington HS
10-9 Green Mountain Debates workshop at UVM
