News from Vermont Debate AKA The Voice of Edwin is the weekly newsletter of the Edwin Lawrence Debate Union at the University of Vermont, an endowed co-curricular program which trains students in debating and sponsors national competition and community events. Policy debate is a research intensive activity, as most of our readers know. No time is more research intensive than the days before the first tournament. With 14 teams headed to Buffalo this weekend the pitch has been feverish at Huber House. People are standing in line to use computers, the copier, and (of course) the paper cutter. Every possible flat surface is covered with pages and bits of paper. The laser printer and the copier keep on humming. People are exulting over the evidence they have found, are frustrated because of the evidence they cannot find, and the air is full of questions about the arguments that are being prepared. The seminar room (dedicated to Edwin Lawrence, of course) is a constant area of activity, with briefing, practice debates and training activities filling the room with sound and movement. Oh, and the Asian Studies program (our friends and neighbors here at 475 Main Street) also have a few classes there each week.

BUFFALO DETAILS:
We depart Friday at various times. A list of departures will be circulated on the debater listserv as well as posted in the office. The hotel is seven hours and four minutes away from us, according to MapQuest.
We stay in the lovely Blue Falls Motel at $45/night. It might be a good idea to bring an extra towel and a sleeping bag is not a bad idea.
We will return on Sunday with vans leaving as people are eliminated from the tournament.


NEWS AND NOTES OF THE LDU FAMILY

SHANE EGIZI from Hong Kong: "I finally received the LDU newsletter. I am happy to hear that LDU is going strong. I am now just entering my 3rd month here in Hong Kong. Everything is going quite well. I am teaching Kindergarten Chinese kids. They are really cute, but wow! They are a handful. I have settled into the city pretty well. Jess and I have found a few really good restaurants we frequent quite often. We found an apartment on the Kowloon side of Hong Kong. It is on a mountainside and is quite peaceful and clean. We were thinking of living right in the city but life is hectic here. We figured we needed to get away each night, besides we found a 3 bedroom apartment with a deck and balcony. It's pretty sweet. I have been to mainland China once so far and it was a big culture shock compared to Hong Kong. The city I went to was Shenzhen. We planning a trip to Beijing sometime this fall or during our winter break. I have some pictures that I will send eventually. ANDREA (LOOBY) AMICANGELO: Finishing law school writes: " Things here are good. Jay and I moved to Erie, PA and bought a house. He is enjoying being a professor. Law school is going well. I will be a senior editor on the Law and Technology Journal next year. I am currently working at the District Attorney's Office in Erie, PA. I worked in a large firm last summer and now I am comparing that to criminal prosecution. I like it more than I thought that I would like it! I see that you have some tournaments in the Syracuse area. If you are in need of a rusty novice judge, I would be happy to help. I am sure it will all come back if you elect to have me judge for you. Anyway, I hope everything is going well. I am applying for judicial clerkships in Erie, PA and contemplating going back to the District Attorney's Office after graduation." jaleo1@hotmail.com

Now in the 290s it is only a matter of time (and not a very long time) until Flashpoint reaches its 300th show. Ideas are being sought for how this show should be done. Let us know of any ideas.
