There have been years when many new debaters indicate interest and start training, but that doesn't mean they end up going to tournaments, as preparation and early practice debates can be somewhat discouraging. Not this year. Not only was the turnout strong for new debaters, but they have been very diligent at attending training, copying and working with their evidence, and arranging for and following through on practice debates. This weekend saw a number of practice debates, and everyone showed for them. At one point on Friday there were three practice debates going on at once in the LDU offices.
A number of the new novices have indicated they will be going to Rochester even though it is very early in the season. Five novice teams are scheduled to attend Rochester next weekend, compared to three teams willing to take the early splash last year. More experienced debaters have been extremely useful in serving as critics for practice debates and advisors for the new debaters. Special thanks go to Brian Cole, Teresa Hill, Steph McDonald, and Shana Bryce for their efforts.
The season began at Georgia State with mixed results. The young teams [two sophomores one one team, a junior and a fresher on the other]. The good outcome was that all four debaters and both coaches were very enthusiastic about their argument choices and their debate abilities against the nation's best. The other outcome was that the teams were 3-5 [Sheila Limprevil and Edwin Owusu] and 2-6 [Jillian Marty and Jake Meany]. Coach Helen Morgan also was encouraged, as she and Justin Parmett watched several debates and had some insight on what needs to be done. It was clear that the main problem was a lack of frontlines, as preparation time before the tournament had featured producing arguments as opposed to being ready to defend those arguments in specific. There was also a lack of organization so that needed arguments were not always close at hand. The coaches and debaters concluded that these were matters that could be resolved and set aside Tuesday evening to begin working on them.
