Sometimes recruitment works and sometimes it doesn't work. It is hard to predict and how why these things happen, but it seems to be happening for the LDU this year. "The best advertising is word of mouth," noted LDU director Snider, "and the word seems to be out that the Lawrence Debate Union is a good place for active intellects on campus to get a brain workout as well as have a good time." With nearly 40 debaters signed up and receiving training, coaches have quite a job on their hands to train new people and get them ready for their first debate tournament. AND there are 18 people in Justin Morgan Parmett's debate class who will be going to some tournaments!

NEWS AND NOTES OF THE LDU FAMILY
LISA
HELLER got married! Last Sunday down in Woodstock, Connecticut, Lisa
Heller got married to Dennis Boregina (sorry if we spelled it wrong). It was
a lovely service and swank reception, and the party wasn't bad either. Many
LDU friends were there, including LDU director Snider, Jeff "Scud"
Cedarfield (more news about him in future weeks), LDU supporter Sallie Chafer,
Sarah Snider, and Justin Green. Many of Lisa's friends from her debate coaching
history were also there, including people from her work with the Rhode Island
Debate League. Family members came from Columbia (Lisa is a dual citizen of
the USA and Columbia) as well as from all over America. They plan to vacation
and honeymoon in December. Lisa is now a faculty member in Speech Communication
at Cape Cod Community College.

KAT KOLLER TOSI reports: "Just to bring you the update: I am teaching in Mandalay, in the middle of Myanmar. This is proving quite challenging. Although the owner of the school wished to implement many positive changes, the military dictatorship (members of which MUST be employed by the school in high positions although they are totally clueless) stopped the whole thing. So, I was offered the position of DOS and then un-offered it due to politics. The whole thing was a bummer and an eye opener. Life in Mandalay is rather dull as it is a Chinese trading town without much to do or see. They are chopping down trees like mad to build these big communist inspired cement houses. Communication is difficult as the mail service doesn't work and email is sometimes on, sometimes off. At present, I'm working on developing research for a publication based on the impact of rote learning specific to how it further supports dictatorial psychology in Burma. Don't know if they will let me conduct it, though. The next plan is to look for a job for 2005/2006 elsewhere. I plan to go to Yangon to work for 3 months after this contract ends. Rangon is quite impressive: green and mellow and quiet (beeping of horns, bicycles and mopeds banned by THE MAN). In any case, wanted to drop you a line and say a big hello. Hope all is well with you. And that the LDU kicks butt this season."
