NOVICE CHAMPIONS
[L-R Margit Brue, Teresa Hill, Brian Cole, Adam Gana]
The University of Rochester tournament opened the LDU's season with a bang. Seven teams attended and brought home an excellent 31-17 record with a 4-2 mark in elimination debates. Cases worked well, negative strategies were effective and interesting and while not all areas were perfect the trip was a very positive one.
Special congratulations go to Margit Brue, Sheila Limprevil and Edwin Owusu who attended their first LDU tournament.
The novices led the way, with Teresa Hill and Brian Cole finishing the preliminary debates with a 6-0 record. Meanwhile Adam Gana and Margit Brue were 5-1. Both won their quarterfinal debates over West Virginia and Army 3-0, which set them to face each other in the semifinal round. UVM teams do not debate against each other in competition, so Hill and Cole advanced by virtue of their better record. Hill and Cole defeated Army 3-0 in the finals to claim the title. Margit Brue was the 4th speaker in the division, Adam Gana was 5th, Teresa Hill was 8th and Brian Cole was 9th.
Junior varsity teams showed strong performances but did not make it to the top. Casey Gervais and Meredith Parmett were 4-2 before losing to Binghamton in the quarterfinals. Claudia Greenman and Edwin Owusu were also 4-2 and lost to Cornell in the quarterfinals. Sheila Limprevil and Abigail Trebilcock were 3-3 and just missed the elimination rounds. Meredith Parmett was 4th speaker and Casey Gervais was 6th.
Varsity teams fought hard and debated well but just fell short. Aaron Fishbone and Shawn Wilkerson were 3-3. Jillian Marty and Vilasa Campbell continued their determination to debate in higher divisions and finished a respectable 2-4. Aaron Fishbone was 4th speaker.
