With 40 members on the phone list and after an intense weekend of work by the experienced debaters, LDU 2002-03 has begun to take shape. Recruiting has been strong, there are many returning debaters, and debaters who were once considered "younger" are now taking the responsibility of leadership, and leading by example.
New teams were formed, and included Mukherjee & Varela, Hellmuth & Bryce, Welch & Reimer, Balas & Suyarkulova, Hunt & Linder. Many of the new teams vowed to attend the first regional tournament at Rochester.
Alums joined in to serve as coaches as Abigail Trebilcock '01, now working for the Dean for America Campaign, announced her intention to serve as a coach and instructor. Longtime LDU supporter and alum Greta Lockwood '00 also attended to show her support and availability as coach and judge. They both got a hearty round of applause. They join other alums Charles Hoag '01 and Matthew Sweeney '01 as coaches, along with student coaches Shawn Wilkerson and Steph McDonald.

The real surprise
announcement at the meeting was that two UVM coaches are now engaged to be
married. Justin and Helen were on the debate team at the same time, but never
debated together and did not date each other. Since then they went their separate
ways for graduate school but a new bond grew and developed, and now they find
themselves coaching for the old home team and about to create a new team of
their own -- a family unit. Helen flashed the beautiful and large ring Justin
gave her when he proposed, a ring his mother had worn and one that his family
wanted him to use for his own marriage. Everyone is very happy for them, and
the glow they gave off was obvious. They join other recent LDU matches, including
Laura LaPierre and Glenn Ellingson, Erynne Ross and Matt Byrne, and Jethro
Hayman and Cleopatra Jones. Stay tuned for more details.
