The LDU has received two $500
grants from the UN Foundation as part of their "The People Speak" program.
The program takes applications for events covering specific topic areas
and awards grants. The LDU applied for two grants to sponsor their regular
television program, FLASHPOINT, in September and received approval on
both. The funds can then be used to promote the events as well as regular
activities of the LDU.
Plans are to submit four more
grants, two for future FLASHPOINTS, and one for an on-campus speak out
as well as one for a debate to be webcast on the Internet. For more information
about this program go to http://www.thepeoplespeak.org/.

| EU ambassador and USA ambassador at last year's IDA |
Now in its third year, the International debate Academy, held in central Europe over the Thanksgiving holidays, will be receiving visitors from the LDU this year. Nick Landsman-Roos, Leslie Keller and Jake Meany were chosen to attend the one-week instructional program. In its first year the IDA had 30 students from 5 countries, but in its second year had 68 students from 15 countries. The program includes seven days of rigorous debate instruction that also includes a tournament at the end. Faculty this year will come from the UK, USA, Serbia, Hong Kong, Singapore, Korea, Malaysia and Slovenia. If you want to see a video of the final round from last year (in English) go to http://debate.uvm.edu/watchdebate.html and look for the first debate in the column on the left. Perhaps next year we can see LDU students in that debate! The program is a cooperative venture with the Slovenian national debate program, UVM's World Debate Institute, and the USA embassy in Slovenia.

"Kat here! Just to keep you posted, I am now working in
South Korea in a coastal town called Pohang at a preparatory school. Everything
has a lego-land feeling and everything BEEPS. I have a video entry phone in
my apartment, which is fun to play with. It was time to leave Burma. Things
were getting more unstable all the time. Also, I am now a published contributing
author in a book called To Asia With Love, a
travel guide for the region (http://www.toasiawithlove.com/) No money, just
fame :) haha. I see that Jason Jarvis has been active in Korea building the
debate community. Hurray! Could you send me his contact details? Please let
me know if I could be of help. And perhaps I can get my school interested
too. I'll test the waters. Lots of love to you. Keep on rocking. PS I just
bought an IPOD and am in love with it."
