Through a cooperative effort between the Lawrence Debate Union, the UVM Asian Studies Outreach Program, the World Debate Organization, Inner Mongolia Normal University, and the People's Republic of China, UVM debate has been invited to organize a summer debate institute to be held in China in English. UVM coach Alfred Snider visited China in 2001 and found considerable excitement there about debating. Large crowds turned out for lectures about debating and many students formed clubs and activities devoted to debate.
That relationship has borne fruit as IMNU has offered to host a debate institute next summer. "It really is an exciting opportunity," noted Snider, "and it will be the first time anything like this has been held in China. I would have to thank my IMNU colleague Chen Yao and my UVM colleague Juefei Wang for their hard work and cooperation. The students are very verbal and analytical, and China is ready to take its place among major debating nations." The plan is to hold a seven day institute this summer in Hohhot at IMNU and invite students from various parts of China as well as other parts of Asia. "There is considerable debating activity growing in Mongolia and Korea, as well as established debating in places like Japan, and we hope to attract students from all of these countries," smiled Snider. A group of three US faculty will go to China to spearhead the effort.
In other international
news, WDI faculty member Jason Jarvis has taken a faculty position at Kyung
Hee University in Seoul, Republic of Korea. His Dean, Kyung-Ja Lee, visited
WDI this summer as a guest. Jason hopes to expand Korean debating and already
has stirred up considerable interest. Luis de Llano of Venezuela, who attended
WDI as a guest this summer also, has returned to his home country to good
news. He has been named Director of Public Communication for leading television
station Televen, and reports that this should only help his drive to put debate
in as many Venezuelan schools as possible. He is currently working with a
consortium of universities, businesses, and educational organizations. Good
luck, Luis! Also, Professor James Fegan of Wasada University in Japan is visiting
the LDU this Thursday to learn more about our activities and ways to promote
debating.
