The LDU reconvened on Monday night and a good crowd turned out to welcome each other back, to welcome some new people, and to welcome back those we have missed. Students and staff recounted their adventures from the summer.
WELCOME: Stephanie Kimmerer of Florida, an incoming first year who was at WDI and has joined the team.
WELCOME BACK: Jake Meany and Edwin Owusu, after absences from UVM.

NAKOBE
MORGAN PARMETT
On May 19th 2004
Nakobe Shai came knocking on our door
He weighed 7 pounds and 14 ounces
For as this poem now announces
He's entered our world -- forever changed
Life is being rearranged
Our family has grown by one
With the birth of our new son
With all our love, we're so glad to say
Welcome to the world, Nakobe Shai!
-Helen & Justin Morgan Parmett
ADAM LEE, formerly of the University of Texas and most recently the University of Rochester coaching staff, has joined the LDU as a coach. Long one of our favorite judges and most respecting coaching opponents, Adam is joined the LDU while he attends Vermont Law School.
JEN KNOPS, an LDU alumna and now at Schoenberg Law in Burlington, has joined the LDU as a coach for the upcoming year.
GRETA LOCKOOD and CHARLIE HOAG will be coaching again this year, and will be joined by KAYCE MASSEY.
AFGAHNISTAN may well be the training destination of LDU coach ALFRED "TUNA" SNIDER. He has been contacted by a group there to come and train Afghani debaters for a series of radio debates. He recently finished a book on the subject entitled, VOICES IN THE SKY: RADIO DEBATES.
ALFRED SNIDER had a busy summer, including a Mexico vacation, chairing the UDL Ideafest in Chicago, tabbing the NFL National high school speech and debate tournament in Salt Lake City, teaching at a debate workshop in Slovenia, running the World Debate Institute at UVM for four weeks, and then finishing the summer with two books sent to the publisher.
All of our best wishes go to long-time LDU supporter JOAN SMITH, UVM Dean of Arts and Sciences, whose medical condition has worsened. Joan is at home in Hartland, now under the care of Hospice, and will spend her remaining days with her five children, four grandchildren, and husband. Joan is not receiving visitors or calls. Letters are welcome and may be addressed to her at 346 Town Farm Hill Road, Hartland, VT 05048.

The LDU is swinging
into action to recruit new debaters to the team. 20 students have signed up
for Justin's debate class, but we want more! Recruitment meetings are scheduled
for next week. Students will attend these meetings if they see our posters and
LDU members will be there to tell them our story. Monday 9/6 Zoe, Bent, brady.
Tuesday 9/7 Stephanie, Ashley, Zoe. Wednesday 9/8 Jake, Edwin, Stephanie. All
meetings are at 5 PM in Huber House.
Posters need to be put up and we need to keep putting them up. Stephanie: Waterman,
Williams, Haris-Millis. Charlie: Billings. Nick Lafayette, Simpson. Zoe: Library,
Votey. Ashley: Kalkin. Justin: Bookstore. Jason: CWP. Bent: WDW. Brady: L&L,
MAT.

This is the tentative travel schedule.
