As the school year began the first Lawrence Debate Union meeting of the year was well-attended and had a very positive atmosphere. The team that swept the novice national titles, won the JV national title for the third straight year and finished #6 overall in the national standings began implementing its plan to move on to increased success and even more fun than the many good times students and staff had last year.
The plan involved the usual
as well as the unexpected:
-Rigorous novice recruitment and training program to cultivate debaters
for now and for the future.
-Integration of larger numbers of experienced debaters into a more advanced
research and preparation regime.
-Creation of digital library of all research and back files for instant access
on the road.
-International travel.
-A UVM scrimmage to prepare everyone early in the season.
-Encouragement of debaters to "compete up" a division to prepare for later
national success.
-Better utilization of alumni and volunteer skills in training and traveling.
SNIDER DIRECTS TOURNAMENT OPERATIONS AT USA HIGH SCHOOL SPEECH AND DEBATE NATIONALS
The
National forensic League held the largest speech and debate tournament ever
in Philadelphia and Delaware in June, and LDU director Snider was the Director
of Tournament Operations for the fourth consecutive year. Over 5000 contestants
and judges were involved in thirteen events. The contests stretched over
five days and events took place at two locations in Philadelphia and two
locations in Delaware. "It was a daunting administrative task," Snider noted,
"but this is so important to so many students that I really enjoy trying
to make it work for them. The opening session was at Philadelphia Eagles
stadium, and Snider was interviewed by a crew from ESPN Sportscenter producing
a fluff piece for the event. Look for a film clip in coming weeks. LDU alumna
Sarah Snider also helped run the event.
LDU HELPS EUROPEAN DEBATE WORKSHOP FOR HIGH SCHOOL STUDENTS
The
LDU helped design the curriculum and implement the program at a one week
high school debate training program in Slovenia. The students then went on
to represent Slovenia at the International Debate Education Association's
Youth Forum (where Aaron Fishbone, LDU alumni, was a trainer) and won numerous
awards. The program is sponsored by Za in Proti (Z.I.P.) the NGO sponsoring
the slovenian national debater program. High school students in the program
had previously won first place in the English as a Foreign Language division
at the World Schools Debating Championship held in Canada, and placed 9th overall.
WORLD DEBATE INSTITUTE BRINGS STUDENTS TO BURLINGTON FOR ANOTHER SUMMER
The
23rd World Debate Institute took place on the UVM campus again this summer.
The program featured programs for high school students, university students,
as well as teachers and coaches. The program taught public debate, parliamentary
debate, policy debate, middle school debate and debate across the curriculum.
Former LDU veterans Jillian Marty, Gordie Miller, Sarah Snider, Sam Nelson,
Helen & Justin Morgan Parmett, and Jackie Massey, as well as others, were
on hand to instruct. "My highlight," noted Snider, "was the public debate
we had in Spanish between two Venezuelan debaters about whether the Chavez
government had been good for Venezuela. They set an excellent example of how
difficult situations can be handled through debate." This was the first year
the program was administered through Continuing Education and the verdict was
that this new partnership is working out very well.
WORLD DEBATE INSTITUTE-ASIA CREATES LDU-KOREA PARTNERSHIP
Jason
Jarvis was an Emory debater who was a student at WDI and later a faculty
member. After WDI trained Dr. Geyong-ho Hur of Kyung Hee University of Korea
in 2000 and debate in Korea began, Jason Jarvis went there as a faculty member
at Kyung Hee is help jump start debate in Korea. This summer the Asian Debate
Institute was held for 65 high school students debating in English, and WDI-Asia
was held for 68 college and university students from eight different countries.
Both programs were modeled after WDI with modifications as appropriate for
the Asian debate scene. The LDU-WDI-WDIAsia partnership was worked out last
spring. The faculty consisted of debate trainers from countries such as Canada,
Malaysia, Philippines, Singapore, Thailand, Korea, Japan, Slovenia, USA,
and others. Students came from as far away as Russia. "I was stunned to see
the WDI model operating so successfully in Asia," Snider noted, "but it really
is a tribute to what Jason Jarvis has done to make Korea a center for debate
training in Asia. I also got to learn from experienced Asian colleagues about
techniques and methods of debate training I was not yet familiar with." The
final rounds will be posted as videos at Debate Central soon, so stay tuned
for that news.
