Edwin Lawrence wanted a banquet to be held at the end of each debate season to celebrate the forensic experience. Every spring we invite a few honored guests and all LDU parents to join us for a good time. A booklet about the year is prepared, seniors say good-bye, there is a minimum of oratory, and the various prizes for debate achievement may be distributed. Substantial cash awards accompany many of these prizes. These awards are distributed based on service to the LDU and others on the team, and achievement in representing the LDU and UVM in analysis and performance. A committee appointed by the coaches gives out these awards. This year and banquet was held ECHO Leahy Center for Lake Champlain, a fine modern building on the waterfront here in Burlington, Vermont. The rates were reasonable and the setting fairly spectacular.
The fellowship was excellent as people gathered, visited and had photo opportunities on the veranda overlooking the lake. It was a beautiful day and a beautiful sunset was coming on. It was great to meet so many parents and see who these people I had been working with came from. I was also pleased that alumni Jillian Marty and Gordie Miller were there.

Special awards were given to Jillian Marty, Alumni of the year,
as well as Helen and Justin Morgan Parmett for their four years of dedicated
service and excellence as coaches. Jillian was saluted for her willingness
top travel great distances to coach LDU teams at far away tournaments and
for her love for the LDU. Thanks to alumni Chuck Morton for founding this
award and we plan to continue it. The farewell to Helen and Justin had three
debaters past and present make this presentation, including Jen Knops, Shane
Clark and Nick Landsman-Roos.
During their four years here are some of their accomplishments:
-An average rank of 13 in the national sweepstakes during that period.
-The expansion of the team into the largest policy debate program in the nation.
-The winning of three consecutive junior varsity national championships.
-Two novice national championships and a second place.
-Qualifying two teams for the NDT.
-19 tournament championship first place winners.
The word “family” kept getting used about how Helen and Justin
made students feel. It was quite appropriate. For more information about Helen

The final thing that happens at our banquet is that each of
our graduating seniors gets to make a short speech of farewell or whatever
they decide to say. They are always quite varied and also entertaining. This
year we heard from Zoe Anderson, David Bates, Noah Lynn, Brady Fletcher, Matt
Silverman and Mike McMahan. Zoe was spirited and sincere, David was provocative
and introspective, Noah was cool and mellow, Brady was entertaining and passionate,
Matt was reflective and sincere, and Mike was eloquent and thankful, especially
to Ethan Nelson.
Then it ended. The food was great and the setting was wonderful. We have
traditionally used the Waterman Manor up on campus, but might come back here
to the ECHO for our banquet. LDU director Snider said, "This is my 24th LDU
banquet. To me, it always seems like it is New Year’s
Eve, the end of my year, and I get to start again and anew. Thanks to everyone
who helped stage the banquet, including our official host Jason Hitchcock.
Let’s do it again next year!"

this year's needs met, the LDU fundraising focus now turns to enhancing the
long-term financial viability of the program. The goal is to enhance the
endowment so that the program will be financially secure through the 21st
century. Many alumni received a mailing in the last two
weeks outlining the beginning of our campaign and the reasons for giving.
If you did not, please email your mailing address to Tuna at alfred.snider@uvm.edu.
Specific efforts include:
-Collection and expansion of names and addresses to fill out the alumni
contact list. PLEASE SEND US A LIST OF PEOPLE YOU REMEMBER AS BEING ON
THE TEAM WITH YOU. EVEN IF YOU CANNOT MAKE A CONTRIBUTION YOU CAN CONTRIBUTE
IN THIS IMPORTANT WAY.
-Establishment of relationships with debaters from the 1950's and 1960's
about the LDU of the 21st Century.
-Creation of giving plans and recognition goals.
-Establishment of a alumni referral service so that former debaters can
make contact with their team mates.
-Work to establish a companion endowment for bequests and targeted giving.
-Events to be held in major cities
to bring together debate alumni and others.
-Creation of a "Distinguished Alumni Award" to be given to an outstanding alumni
each year at the banquet.
"We need to score some big donations to raise another million dollars,"
said Snider, "and that includes working on planned giving, bequests
and more, especially from the debaters of Doc Huber's era, who are now
really making their debate experience pay off. They have the ability to
give and the Development office at UVM is solidly behind us with all of
their expertise. If Jerry Falwell's Liberty University can spend $500,000
a year on debate, we can achieve a goal of $130,000 for UVM."
