from Vermont Debate AKA The Voice of Edwin is the weekly newsletter
of the Edwin Lawrence Debate Union at the University of Vermont, an
endowed co-curricular program which trains students in debating and
sponsors national competition and community events. The newsletter is
published every Tuesday during the school year and infrequently at other

The annual trip to JV & Novice nationals at Towson University is always a difficult one every year. It is about a 12 hour drive and the weather doesn't always cooperate. The tournament is large and difficult, but we keep at it because our commitment to teaching new people how to debate is so strong. Sometimes we win and sometimes we don't do so well. This time, we won.
The University of Vermont did something that has never been done in the 21-year history of the tournament. Both of the top speakers were from the same school. And, the JV national championship belongs to Vermont. Eight teams attended and six teams reached the elimination rounds. Five of the six teams advanced through the first elimination round. The squad posted an impressive 38-31 win-loss record, including an 8-5 record in elimination rounds. Five students won speaker awards. Helen Morgan received a judging award.
In the JV division the performances were excellent. Teresa Hill was named the #1 JV debater in America, while Lana Langsweirdt was #4. Lana and Teresa were 6-1 in prelims, while Jen Knops & Brian Cole as well as Edwin Owusu & Jillian Marty were 4-3 -- all reaching the elimination rounds. The squad came through in the clutch as every team that needed to win the last round to clear did so. Brian & Jen won their double octafinal round against John Carroll University 3-0 before losing 2-1 in the octafinals to Southwest Texas 2-1. Lana & Teresa got a bye in the doubles before losing to John Carroll University 2-1. Jillian 7 Edwin won their double octafinal against Middle Tennessee 3-0, their octafinal round against West Point 2-1, their quarterfinal round against Pepperdine 2-1, their semifinal round against NYU/Columbia 2-1, and their final round against Liberty 2-1. Nikki Muradian and Julianne Hellmuth did not reach the elim rounds.
In the novice division Lindsey Melander was named the #1 Novice debater in America, while Eric Mates was #10 and Colin Kern was #11. Three UVM teams advanced to elimination rounds, including Eric Mates & Lindsey Melander, Colin Kern & Carlos Varela, and Kayce Massey & Timm Reimer. In double octafinals Timm & Kayce lost to Binghamton 3-0, while Carlos & Colin beat Case Western 3-0 and Lindsey & Eric defeated Liberty 2-1. In the octafinals Colin & Carlos lost to Rochester 2-1 while Eric & Lindsey lost to Catholic 2-1. Leonel Velez & Ryan O'Connor failed to reach the elimination rounds, but posted a respectable 3-4 record.
Helen Morgan was rated as one of the top five judges in the tournament on ballots submitted by the debaters themselves. This keeps alive UVM's extensive string of winners in this important category.
March 16, 2003 is a day that will live in LDU song and story -- the day of firsts!

to go to the greatest coaching staff imaginable: Helen Morgan (an explosive
source of on-point arguments), Justin Parmett (the provider of excellent strategies),
Gordie Miller (who killed the opposition's politics disadvantages), Aaron
Fishbone (who wrote excellent answers to arguments he heard while judging),
Meredith Parmett and Claudia Greenman (who judged and provided intelligence).
Even Tuna, who typed a lot of round report forms into the intelligence database.
We also need to send a special thanks to Sallie Chafer for her willingness
to let 20 people crash at her house for two nights, fed us excellent meals,
provided impressive moral support, and gave out excellent chocolate at just
the right moments. Also thanks for Thrifty Rentals of Burlington for their
support.

Level of competition: Open.
Favorite music in the van: Reggae.
Pet peeve: Public Displays of Affection.
I am grateful for: My Fam and being able to go to school all the way across
the country so I can be in B-Town.
Worst moment in debate: When Paul Kerr said our affirmative was the worst
he had ever heard in all of his involvement with db8, and when he said that
rape just wasn't really a tangible or "large" enough impact .
Favorite team to debate: Adam and Elliot from USMA West Point (always cordial
and engaging, usually leaves me moved).
Favorite team to beat: Liberty.
Favorite judge: Maxwell Schnurer at Marist, I can't say enough good things
about this person. I can't wait for the time when he has some dedicated debaters
because I think his program can send a powerful message to the community.
And I love who he is bringing along to coach with him, Andy Jimbo, and Anoop.
Favorite tournament: CEDA NATIONALS (if its warm).
Favorite thing about debate: Someone has to listen to me for a total of 15
minutes uninterrupted. And it‚s a space that I think important ideas
can be discussed. It has truly been a way to re-claim my voice and power within.
Least favorite thing about debate: I feel sometimes its difficult for me to
connect with language sometimes. And although I love my team but so many long
drives is a little rough on the body. Waking up before 6 am at the T's doesn't
always provide pleasantries either--enough ranting, I promise the good outweigh
the bad.
Favorite debate speech: 1ac even though I don't get to say it anymore, I still
write them.
Most inspirational person on the team: Jillian - We have had our ups and downs,
but man--I gots' respect.
What debate means to me: Wow--who knows, everything, I do not think I could
have had a complete college experience without being in debate and I don't
think I could db8 for any other squad in the country.
Personal challenge: settling down in between rounds if I get pissed.
Comment: Oh yes, watch out for Vermont again at CEDA we've got our dance team
ready to go!

2001-2002 season.
