| LDU DEBATERS POSE IN THE FALL |
The alumni and supporters of the Lawrence Debate Union have responded
to the call for donations and the financial goals are within sight as this
newsletter goes to press. "We have been able to buy the plane tickets and get
the hotel rooms for the NDT in Chicago, and now we just need funds for tournament
fees and the rental car," said LDU Director Snider. "It has been nice to come
in and find donations of many different amounts waiting for me in the office,
but I would have to say that reading the touching notes and the warm regards
that accompany the checks to be very heart warming and gratifying. People obviously
hold the LDU in high regard, and they remember what it did for them."
This week over 400 mailers go out to alumni and supporters in an additional
fundraising effort, mostly targeted at long-term finding. "The endowment has
given us the security to focus on training and development, and not on a chase
after trophies," said Snider, "and we need to make sure that that security
is bolstered in the next generations." Asked if this meant he was nearing retirement,
Snider smiled and said, "Well, I probably will retire within the next twelve
to twenty years, but I want to start now because my goal is to raise a million
dollars for the endowment. It may take longer than that, so a late retirement
might be in store for me."
Other projects include a survey of past UVM yearbooks to gather more alumni
names
for future outreach as well as trying to get alumni already on the list to send
us names of those who were on the team with them. The goal is to establish
personal contacts with as many former debaters as possible to create long-term
relationships that can lead to significant additions to the endowment later.
By request of some alums, meetings have been held with the Vermont Community
Foundation to enable alumni to make larger gifts that will
become an endowment to support Vermont Debate that will be housed at VCF. Gifts
can also be given to UVM to add to endowment funds. "We hope to have some exciting
announcements in the weeks to come on the endowment front," said Snider.

The showing is quite excellent when you consider that most Vermont teams debate in a higher division than they are eligible for, thus damaging the ability to get points.

LISA HELLER
BORAGINE
3/8/06: "So today's the baby's due date, but our wee one has yet to make her grand entrance, in case you were curious. I stopped work on Friday, so now I can just sit around and eat bon-bons. Here is a photo taken over a month ago by my friend Judy (I'm actually bigger now, if you can believe it - more gravitational pull in my belly than several small moons). Speaking of moons - there's a full moon on Monday, so it will be interesting to see if it affects things, hmmm?"
From her mom Sarah Heller Monday 3/13/06 7:56 PM: "Lisa is in labor now. As of 5 PM she was having contractions about 5 minutes apart. She should be at the hospital by now. Send her, Dennis and Samantha your prayers and positive thoughts."
From Sarah Tuesday 3/14/06 9:47 AM: "Samantha Fern was born at 7:09 AM today. Everyone is doing bery well, if a bit tired. Samantha weighed in at 8 lbs 1 oz, 21 inches. She arrived wide awake, Mommy says, and very beautiful. Lisa thanks you all for your positive vibes as they definitely reacher her just when she needed them. Lisa managed to have a natural birth with all your help and an awesome doula, doctor and, of course, daddy Dennis."
