The LDU squad descended on the Towson University campus in Maryland to attend three tournaments -- the Novice Nationals, the Junior Varsity Nationals, and a varsity tournament the Chesapeake Classic. UVM debaters won awards in all divisions and compiled a 31-29 overall record.
In the novice division, three teams reached elimination rounds. After a 7-0 preliminary finish, Vilasa Campbell and Jillian Marty lost a disputed 2-1 octafinal decision to California State University at Chico. Vilasa was recognized as the #3 novice debater in America while Jillian was recognized as #4. David Moss and Abigail Trebilcock were 4-3 in prelims before bowing in double octafinals, as did Claudia Greenman and Wendy O'Connor. Abigail was recognized as the #15 novice debater in America. Adam Gana and Jill Witney finished 3-4 and Brian Cole and Vanessa Arms finished 2-5 at their first debate tournament ever, which was an outstanding achievement so late in the year.
In the junior varsity division Casey Gervais and Meredith Parmett were 5-2 in prelims before bowing 2-1 to Liberty University in octafinals.
In the varsity division Aaron Fishbone and Shawn Wilkerson finished 3-4 but Aaron was recognized as the #8 debater in the tournament.
While the showing was strong the expectations had been stronger, and at the Monday night meeting everyone vowed to improve the squad record in elimination rounds.
Special recognition should be given to friends and alumni who showed their support. Sallie Chafer hosted everyone at her house on Thursday evening after a long drive, and pampered the LDU with delicious foods and fresh baked goods. Lana Langswierdt, now on an internship in Washington, DC, contributed by serving as a judge for novice debate. Helen Morgan, now doing graduate study at the University of Pittsburgh, served as a judge and coach. Chuck Morton visited and began work on a fundraising campaign to honor Robert Huber. Carla Mirabelli, now a political even organizer in Washington, DC, dropped by to visit and wish everyone good luck. LDU former debaters Jeff Nichelson, Greta Lockwood, and Sarah Snider also were on the trip as coaches and judges.

'99, now coaches at the University of South Carolina. He was recognized at
the Towson tournament as the #1 judge in the opinion of the attending debaters.
Each team rated their judges and Justin received the highest rating of the
over 100 judges in the pool. Justin continues a remarkable streak of recognition
for LDU alums as judges, since the award has previously been won by LDU alums
Lisa Heller (now at Bates College), Maxwell Schnurer (now at Marist College)
and Gordie Miller (now at Arkansas State). Justin is seen here holding his
traditional lamp award -- keep the light shining!

LDU PLANS SPRING PUBLIC DEBATE ON GREEK SYSTEMThe LDU will be sponsoring an April event which will feature our debaters on the question of whether UVM should retain its current Greek social system, Stay tuned for details! Nat Sillin is the coordinator of this even.
Students, staff, parents, friends, supporters all invited. We celebrate our year, say farewell to those leaving us, and hand out lots of prize money! Long on fun, short on boring speeches, this is an event you won't want to miss. Location and menu to be announced, but circle it on your calendar now. Wendy O'Connor is in charge of planning.

Resolved: that the United States Federal Government should substantially increase
its development assistance, including increasing government to government
assistance, within the Greater Horn of Africa.

The UVM Student Government Association has granted the LDU approximately $9000 for next year, the highest amount the LDU has ever received from SGA. Thanks to President Jillian Marty, Treasurer Abigail Trebilcock, and all those who assisted in the process and attended the hearings.
