It was a busy preparation weekend for the LDU in anticipation of two straight weekends of debate that will gobble up the spring break of most debaters and coaches. While there were practice debates in the seminar room and research in the computer room, there was a lot more going on. On Friday the LDU recorded two new editions of their television show, Flashpoint. Aired in Channel 15 three times a week and available on the Internet as streamed video at http://debate.uvm.edu/flashpoint.html, the show has become a solid foundation of public discourse the LDU initiates on all manner of subjects. Show #264 was "Protest and You" about the ways in which people express political dissent and the benefits and deficits involved with various forms of expression. Show #265 was "Korea Conundrum" about the situation on the Korean peninsula and possible policy alternatives for the USA and northeast Asian nations. Morgan Barber, former LDU debater during the University Heights days, dropped in to visit with debaters and coaches. He is now pursuing writing and artistic careers and has some recent publications and shows.
Alumni will also be in evidence this weekend at the Novice and Junior varsity nationals held in Towson, MD. Aaron Fishbone '02, Meredith Parmett '02, and Claudia Greenman '02 will all be on hand to judge and support the team. Other coaches will include more alumni, Helen Morgan, Justin Parmett, and Gordie Miller.
The tournament itself will, for the first time all year, feature all teams in their qualified divisions. Most of the JV teams going have been debating varsity all year, while many of the novice teams going have been debating in higher divisions as well. Hopes are high for a novice national championship AND for a junior varsity national championship, but the ballots will tell all. With eight teams entered UVM has the largest squad at the tournament.
Special thanks to
Environmental Products and Services of Vermont, a company that made a substantial
donation to cover the food allowances for both remaining tournaments. The
debaters and coaches will be preparing a suitable thank you for such support!
