The LDU had another successful trip this last weekend, made all the more wonderful by the contributions and assistance of our alums and supporters, but the thrill of victory and the agony of defeat was still in evidence.
Helen Morgan & Sarah Snider were 7-0 in the varsity preliminary debates, sweeping the field. Sarah was rated the #1 speaker and Helen the #4 speaker in the varsity division. They defeated Rochester 3-0 in the semifinals before losing 2-1 in the Finals to Pittsburgh, coached oddly enough by an LDU alum Maxwell Schnurer.
Mark Douglas (of Middlebury) and Allana Alexander were 5-2 in the National Novice Championship prelims. They scored a 2-1 victory over Catholic University before bowing 3-0 to Cornell, coached oddly enough by LDU alum Jethro Hayman, in the octafinal round, to finish as the #9 Novice Debate Team in America. Allana was rated the #5 novice debater in America and Mark the #12. Casey Gervais, while not reaching the elimination rounds, was #19.
Rae Lynn Schwartz, LDU coach, received the Outstanding Critic Award along with Maxwell Schnurer of Pittsburgh. This makes the fourth year in a row that the top two critics at the Towson tournament have been either UVM coaches or UVM alums.
Other teams received heartbreaking losses in Round 7, with three teams losing the round they needed to reach the elimination rounds. Thus, Aaron Fishbone & Anthony Pagan, Teddy Malley & Jennifer Knops, and Casey Gervais & Meredith Parmett all finished 3-4. Mike Phippen and Eric Chartran finished at 2-5.
Special recognition has to be given to the outstanding hospitality the LDU received this weekend. Chuck Morton welcomed the entire 17 person posse into his spacious Towson home and entertained and fed everyone with skill and taste. Thanks to Padraic and the three Morton children for putting up with us! Long-time supporter Sallie Chafer hosted the squad on Thursday night in her home and served up an awesome Friday morning breakfast, and also showed up on Sunday to bring a celebratory chocolate angel food cake with Bailey's Irish Cream chocolate frosting. Yum! USAF Major Eric Nelson, now a defense analyst for the Joint Chiefs of Staff in the Pentagon, dropped by to judge a few rounds and entertain us with his stories of Azerbaijan and the Balkans, where he acted in a diplomatic role.
MEETINGS
& ANNOUNCEMENTSThe Lawrence Debate Union and the University of Vermont are joining with the English-Speaking Union in the United Kingdom to sponsor the world’s first live broadcast international internet debate. The event will showcase technological, communicative, and intellectual abilities as well as further promote UVM's proven expertise as a world leader in the organizing and teaching of debating and communication skills to young people.
We will have a streaming video transatlantic debate with our United Kingdom partners, the English-Speaking Union, on 14th March, 2000 at 1:00 PM Eastern Time. You can watch the live streaming video transmission of the debate from your computer screen by pointing your browser to http://www.livetx.com/esudebating.html. On campus the debate will be held in Waterman 111.
The UVM side of the debate is being sponsored by PeoplesForum.com and Apple Computing, while the UK side of the debate is being sponsored by Anderson Consulting.
The debate will be available to a potentially enormous worldwide audience. The debate will be broadcast from UVM as well as from the global live internet broadcast facility of LiveTX.com. The University of Vermont internet debate network [Debate Central] serves 3000 users each day and has been used by citizens in over 70 nations. The English Speaking Union has over 45 branches around the world, with educational links to over 3,000 institutions in the UK and abroad.
