The Voice of Edwin is the weekly newsletter of the Edwin Lawrence Debate Union at the University of Vermont, an endowed co-curricular program which trains students in debating and sponsors national competition and community events. LDU's JACKIE MASSEY NAMED "DEBATE COACH OF THE YEAR" FOR EASTERN USA 2000-2001

Jackie Massey - Recognition Richly Deserved

Jackie Massey, a UVM faculty member who teaches Speech courses, was named Eastern USA Debate Coach of the Year for the 2000-2001 season in a ceremony in Boston at the CEDA East Region Championships, where his teams won the first place sweepstakes award. He received a standing ovation from the crowd, a well deserved recognition to his hard work and determination he has shown all year long. Sam Nelson of the University of Rochester, in remarks upon presentation of the award, mentioned Jackie's determination to do whatever it takes to get as many students as possible to debate. The size and depth of the UVM squad is a testimony to his achievements.

A WEEKEND IN THE LIFE OF THE LDU....

Even when there is no tournament scheduled, the LDU is active. Here are some of the things which took place this last weekend....

• Vermont State High School Debate Championships: Held at Montpelier High School and in the State House LDU Director Alfred C. Snider served as tournament director and five LDU debaters served as judges for the annual contest. The final rounds were held in the House and Senate Chambers. The varsity final was taped and will be broadcast by CCTV Channel 17 in Burlington. Otter Valley defeated Hartford for the varsity title, while in novice the Burlington High School team coached by LDU member Matt Sweeney finished first and second. Steph McDonald, Abigail Trebilcock, Jill Witney and Wendy O'Connor served as judges, while LDU alums Sam Press and David Kelley were also in attendance.
• The SGA Budget Committee heard the LDU budget request for 2001-2002. President Jillian Marty was accompanied by Abigail Trebilcock, Lisbeth Robinson and Duane Compton. Their report is that the haring went well and the team was well prepared to answer any and all questions. On Monday night the SGA heard a supplemental budget request from the LDU to help with expenses for CEDA Nationals.
• The LDU taped programs #227 and #228 of FLASHPOINT on Sunday at the Adelphia Channel 15 Studios. The topics were "Tax Cut Fever" and "Global Warming." Panelists included Vilasa Campbell, Greta Lockwood, Charles Hoag, Aaron Fishbone and Alfred Snider. FLASHPOINT can be seen on Channel 15 at 12:30 PM Wednesdays, 10:30 PM Thursdays, and 1 PM Saturdays. Many FLASHPOINT shows are also available 24/7 at the web site http://debate.uvm.edu/watchdiscussion.html.
• Preparation continued in the offices at Huber House as practice debates were held each day and students used the free weekend to prepare for their season-ending competitions.

LDU PLANS SPRING PUBLIC DEBATE ON GREEK SYSTEM

Students, staff, parents, friends, supporters all invited. We celebrate our year, say farewell to those leaving us, and hand out lots of prize money!
