The Cross Examination Debate Association and the national debate tournament brought their regional tournaments to Burlington last weekend, and the home team showed its strength. With a healthy overall winning record and courageous showing by all teams, the squad outperformed all other schools.
Speaker awards were a good example. In the varsity division Teresa Hill was TOP SPEAKER and Lana Langsweirdt was SECOND SPEAKER as they finished the tournament off with an unprecedented two rounds of double THIRTIES (perfect scores) from the judges. The two debaters continue to explore new rhetorical forms and new channels of discourse as they readjust the fabric of contemporary argumentation, often through the use of original poetry. In the JV division Edwin Owusu was the NINTH speaker. In the novice division, UVM debaters dominated the speaker awards, with Colin Kern as the TOP SPEAKER, Carlos Varela as the SECOND SPEAKER, Tim Reimer as the FOURTH SPEAKER, and Lindsey Melander as the TENTH speaker.
In the elimination rounds the novice teams performed extremely well. In the quarterfinals Carlos Varela and Colin Kern defeated Cornell 2-1 while Lindsey Melander and Eric Mates defeated Rochester 2-1. In the semifinals Lindsey and Eric continued their Rochester domination by sweeping them aside 3-0, while Colin and Carlos gained steam and defeated West Point 3-0. This put both teams in the final round, and the Vermont close-out was accomplished.
In other results Brian Cole and Jennifer Knops defeated three of the four varsity teams in the semifinals, but although 4-2 were out of the semifinals by .8 speaker point. Lana Langsweirdt and Theresa Hill were 3-3. In junior varsity the teams of Edwin Owusu and Jill Witney were 3-3 along with Nikki Muradian and Julianne Hellmuth. In novice Tim Reimer debated by himself when Kayce Massey lost her voice and finished 3-3, a valiant effort. Ryan O'Connor and frank Friel finished 2-4 while Leo Velez and Michael Malone finished 1-5.
In the NDT District 8 tournament there were three bids to nationals, and those went to New York University, Cornell University, and Boston College. Sheila Limprevil and Jillian Marty represented UVM with class and style.
The tournament featured FANTASTIC FOOD provided by parents and supporters of the LDU, creating a family dining atmosphere that built a lot of community spirit among the attendees. Huge thanks go to alumni and supporters, people like Gordie Miller, Sam Miller, Charlie Hoag, Shane Egizi, Matt Sweeney, Abigail Trebilcock, Renee Jackson, Casey Gervais, Joe Ramsey, and many more.
