THE REGIONALS SQUAD POSES WITH SEVERAL SILVER BOWLS
The University of
Vermont won the first place sweepstakes award this last weekend at the Cross
Examination Debate Association East Regional Championship Tournament held
at Boston College. With 26 wins UVM was five wins ahead of the University
of Rochester, who finished second. Cornell and the U.S. Military Academy were
tied for third.
In the Open division Shawn Wilkerson and Jennifer Knops were 5-1 and finished
Second after losing the final round 2-1 to Rochester. Shawn Wilkerson was
named the Top Speaker. In the Junior Varsity division Lisbeth Robinson and
Charles Hoag were 4-2 and finished Third after losing their semifinal round
3-0 to Cornell. The teams of Duane Compton & Dave Moss along with Casey
Gervais and Meredith Parmett reached the elimination rounds and both finished
tied for Fifth in the tournament. Charles Hoag was the Third Speaker, Meredith
Parmett was the Ninth Speaker and Dave Moss (even though a novice) was the
Tenth Speaker. In the Novice division Vilasa Campbell & Jillian Marty
were 5-1 before losing 2-1 to a hybrid team from Cornell & US Military
Academy in quarterfinals to finish Fifth. Claudia Greenman was the Fourth
Speaker in Novice, while Heidi Semanie (in her first tournament EVER) was
Seventh Speaker and Vilasa Campbell was the Eighth Speaker.
In a separate tournament to decide qualifiers to attend the National Debate
Tournament things did not go as smoothly. Aaron Fishbone and Anthony Pagan
were 6-10, losing critical ballots to Boston College, and did not qualify
for the NDT. The squad offers a salute to them for giving it their all.
