Burlington plays host
to the eastern debate community this weekend as two tournaments, CEDA East
Regional Champs and the NDT District 8 Qualifier, will both be held at UVM.
The CEDA tournament will feature three divisions of debate. The NDT Qualifier
will have eight teams competing for three bids to the National Debate Tournament
held in Atlanta later this year.
The tournament will try to set new standards in hospitality, with real Danish
pastries instead of bad doughnuts, fruit, free water and name brand soda throughout
the tournament, candy handouts on day one, a pizza-awards assembly on Sunday,
and a meal home-cooked by parents and family of debaters.

"Some teams did
better than we hoped and some did not do as well as we had hoped," was
the report from Coach Justin Parmett over the phone about the Heart of America
tournament held at the University of Kansas in Lawrence. Three teams attended.
Lana Langsweirdt and Teresa Hill rolled out their new "slam poetry"
strategy and found it was productive as they worked to get the kinks out of
it. They lost their break round to finish 3-4. Colin Kern and Carlos Varela
had the biggest surprise of the weekend. The two novices finished 3-4 in varsity
at one of America's toughest tournaments. Sheila Limprevil and Jillian Marty
were 1-6.
The tournament gave lots of chances to scout people for this weekend and the
LDU watched the elimination rounds all day. Congratulations to Nate Gorelick
and Ricky Garner of NYU who won the tournament, defeating Gonzaga in the finals.
