UVM continued to represent with a strong showing on the national circuit at the prestigious "Heart of America" debate tournament this last weekend at the University of Kansas in Lawrence, KS. For over 30 years this tournament has characterized national excellence in debating. The team of Shawn Wilkerson and Aaron Fishbone debated well at 4-3 and reached the elimination rounds before losing to Lewis & Clark College of Portland, OR. Far more impressive was Aaron Fishbone's achievement of being named the #7 debater in one of America's most difficult varsity debate tournaments. Second year debaters Jillian Marty and Vilasa Campbell were on the trip and scored a 2-5 record, an excellent preparation for them to compete for the East JV title this upcoming weekend at Marist College. Thus, the squad record was 6-9.
The CEDA East Championships and
the NDT District 8 qualifying tournament are both this weekend at Marist
College in Poughkeepsie, NY where UVM alumni Maxwell Schnurer is the current
director. Eleven teams are lined up to go with a real chance to win any
and all of the three divisions.
Thirteen varsity teams will be competing for four spots at the National
Debate Tournament to be held at Southwest Missouri State University in Springfield,
MO. Aaron Fishbone and Shawn Wilkerson have been aiming for this tournament
for some time. Favorites in the tournament are currently NYU and Dartmouth.
UVM will enter four JV teams into a division they have dominated except
for being able to beat Binghamton. Jillian Marty and Vilasa Campbell, Meredith
Parmett and Casey Gervais, Lana Langsweirdt and Claudia Greenman, along
with Anthony Pagan and Edwin Owusu will try and bring home the gold.
UVM will enter six novice teams who will need to knock off Rochester in
order to come home first, and they include Brian Cole and Adam Gana, Teresa
Hill and Jill Witney, Jullianne Hellmuth and Jake Ricker, Amy Myers and
Nikki Muradian, Carlos Varella and Lauren vander Kyl, along with Sky Ganer
and Josh Grenier.
UVM needs more judging! Jackie Massey, Greta Lockwood, Charlie Hoag, and
Sheila Limprevil will be judging. It is hoped that Steph McDonald and Rodrigo
Rojas can also join the judging group!

FUNDRAISING DRIVE FOR NATIONALS CONTINUESThanks to everyone who has sent in donations! We are on track to meet our target but still need some additional help. Some donations have arrived and others we have heard are on the way. We will have a complete thank you list coming up in a few weeks.
Kayce Massey is still working with the Vermont Liquor Control Commission on her idea.
