LDU preparation for the run to the end of the season intensified this weekend. With no tournament to go to, LDU debaters and coaches still found lots of time to work in the debate offices in the hope of better performances to come. With Heart of America (University of Kansas) this weekend, followed by East Regionals at UVM, a weekend off, Towson's Novice & JV Nationals, followed immediately by CEDA Nationals in Phoenix, it is all coming rapidly to a head.
Weekend events included:
a practice debate Helen Morgan called one of the best she has ever seen, intensive
work to change and adapt affirmatives, extensive briefing of extensions to
defend major negative arguments, speaking drills, file organization, poetry
reading, original research, strategy meetings, and a lot more.
The LDU is ready to go public with plans for a ten day debate institute to be held in China this August with the sponsorship of Inner Mongolia Normal University. The program will run from August 14-23, 2003. Faculty is being assembled. The program will serve about 80-100 students from China and other parts of Asia and will be conducted in English. Brochures are now in preparation.
The LDU has announced a program to present debate instruction lectures to a global audience two times a month. The lectures will be streamed live, watched by a global audience, who will then send in email questions that will be answered immediately. The program will feature talented lecturers from America and around the world. The first test broadcast will be on March 5, 2003 at 3 PM ET. It will consist of a live webcast of the Debate Across the Curriculum workshop that the LDU will be presenting to UVM faculty. It can be viewed at http://www.uvm.edu/debate_theater/ . The webcasts will take place on a Wednesday, with morning webcasts aimed at Europe and evening webcasts aimed at Asia because of the time differential. This program involves the active collaboration of the LDU, the World Debate Institute, Claremont Colleges, and Pro & Contra NGO from Slovenia. Thanks to Wes Wright and UVM CIT for their assistance. A fill schedule will be announced.
